3. Animals kill their keepers due to human or mechanical errors, they are not ‘freak accidents’

There have been all too many instances of animals attacking and killing their zookeepers. The animals may be in captivity but their natural instincts are still predatory. Still, the main cause of these tragic deaths is due to faults either human or mechanical.

A female worker at Ueno Zoo in Tokyo was injured when a gorilla bit her right arm as she was escorting it from its public display area to its living space. In South-West Japan, a rare white tiger mauled a zookeeper inside its enclosure and in Cambridgeshire, England, another zookeeper was killed after a tiger entered the enclosure where she was working which was dubbed a “freak accident”. In Indiana, an intern zookeeper was killed by a lion after the animal escaped its locked enclosure and attacked her as she carried out a routine clean.
