7. Only 10% of zoos in America are accredited and do NOT meet minimal standards

Everyone thinks (or prefers to think) that zoos do everything in their power to pamper every single creature with every dollar they can spare. In reality, many zoos do not meet the strict standards of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. A meagre 10 per cent of zoos in the US have been accredited by the organisation. According to the Human Society of the United States:

“Even some AZA-accredited zoos contain forgotten and outdated exhibits. These inadequate displays are often obscured by the multimillion-dollar exhibits that tend to focus on the more glamorous species and habitats.”

Some zoos will offer rides on elephants but as the animals have weak spines, these rides are actually incredibly dangerous for the animals.
