6. Animals regularly die from neglect due to avoidable human errors
In 2017, a zoo in England was allowed to keep its licence despite the fact that almost 500 animals died there in under four years. At another park, chimpanzees died after their enclosure was accidentally overheated; a faulty thermostat sent the heating soaring to 43 celsius, causing the chimps to have heart attacks. At another zoo, a caiman was said to have died after he was left outside in the cold weather by keepers. Whistleblowers at a safari park in Bedfordshire, told how a peacock had been put in isolation due to an outbreak of bird flu, was forgotten about and died of starvation. Woodside Wildlife park was also criticised where 14 meerkats, 16 bats and four prairie dogs died in just 12 months.
