9. Zoos will sometimes end a healthy animal’s life because they have no space for them

Sometimes, zoos tragically end an animal’s life for the sole reason that the zoo no longer has room to house them.

The most notable case was of a giraffe in Copenhagen called Marius, who was euthanised and had its meat fed to lions at the zoo. The case made headlines around the world, forcing the issue into the spotlight as many hit back at the practice which unapologetically sees animals lose their life. Soon after Marius was killed, two adult lions and two cubs were also killed by the same zoo to make room for a new male that had been bought. Clearly, the zoo had limited remorse and learnt nothing from the media backlash. Sadly this is just one case; the reality is just that thousands are killed in European zoos in what is dubbed ‘zoothanasia’.
