26. “Reek”

I’m not sure that anyone really liked Theon when we first met him, back in series 1. He definitely needed bringing down a peg or two.

Arrogant, but not horrid

It came as a bit of a shock when Theon decided to turn against his long-term friend, Robb Stark, when he attacked Winterfell and took command of the castle.

Theon’s control didn’t last for long. But during that time he committed unforgivable acts – including beheading Winterfell’s loyal Master-at-Arms, Ser Rodrik, and burning two farm boys alive so that he could pose them as Bran and Rickon Stark.

Entirely unexpected

Theon was ultimately captured by House Bolton, falling under the brutal hold of Ramsay Bolton (formerly, Snow).

No one was prepared for the horrors inflicted upon Theon by Ramsay. Theon was so broken that he abandoned his name altogether, simply being referred to by both himself and Ramsay as “Reek”.

Reek was too terrified to fight Ramsay

This was a turning point for Theon’s character, and it inspired viewers to rally behind his attempts to reclaim his identity. His transformation into an entirely different person wasn’t exactly expected, and the fact that it was so difficult to watch means it had to make the list.
