1. Ned Stark’s execution
I don’t know about you, but when I first watched Thrones I didn’t even register the thought that one of the main characters could actually die – much less the protagonist.

For the majority of the 1st series, we watched helplessly as Ned got himself into deeper and deeper trouble.

But we never thought that he’d actually lose. He was too honourable, too noble a person to lose.
Poor Ned was out of his depth
That’s probably why we, as an audience, never suspected for one second that Ned would actually be executed.

But unfortunately, he was – largely due to the horrendous King Joffrey. I actually still find it hard to watch Ned’s execution when I’m browsing Thrones clips on YouTube. Seeing poor Sansa and Arya react to the beheading is even worse.
Watch at your own risk
For this very reason, Ned Stark’s death tops the list as the most shocking moment from the show. This scene was the ultimate game changer. It showed that Cersei’s warning words weren’t to be taken lightly:
“When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground.”
