Back in the 70s, Robert De Niro hit the big time.
Starring in cult movies like Mean Streets, Taxi Driver and The Godfather Part II, he began dating fellow actress Diahnne Abbott.
She had starred alongside Robert in a minor role in Taxi Driver, and the pair quickly formed a bond.
After a couple of years of dating, Robert became a parent to Diahnne’s daughter Drena, who was born during a previous relationship. As the family went from strength to strength, the Hollywood couple decided to make things official, and tied the knot in a fairly low key ceremony in 1976.

A few months later, the pair decided to add to their growing family. Diahnne gave birth to their first child together; daughter Raphael.
For over a decade, all seemed well with the family. But after twelve years of marriage, the cracks started to show between the Hollywood couple.
Robert De Niro and Diahnne Abbott eventually split in 1988.
Moving On
Even before his divorce papers went through, the actor had already met the next Mrs De Niro- Grace Hightower, who was working at famed eatery Mr. Chow in London at the time.
The pair met in 1987, but didn’t start a relationship until years later. Robert was dating model Toukie Smith at the time, and had twin sons with a surrogate mother; Julian and Aaron, who were born in 1995.
After his time with Toukie, Robert eventually found his way back to Grace, and they got married in 1997.
But things didn’t go that well for the couple at first. While they had their son Elliot a few months after their wedding, Robert De Niro actually filed for divorce two years into their marriage.
They reportedly had a custody battle over their son at the time, until they smoothed out their troubles and the divorce was halted.

After this, the couple settled down into a happy marriage for 20 years. They had another child called Helen, which brought Robert’s grand total of kids up to six!
But unfortunately, after 21 years of marriage, the couple decided to split.
In his official statement, Robert De Niro said:
“Grace and I have two beautiful children together. We are entering a period of transition in our relationship which is a difficult but constructive process.
I honour Grace as a wonderful mother and ask for privacy and respect from all as we proceed to develop our roles as partners in parenting.”
Fallout
So why did Robert De Niro and Grace Hightower part ways?
Well, apparently it’s down to money troubles…
It seems that Grace has developed a taste for the finer things in life. A Stella McCartney wardrobe, diamond rings. You name it.
So much so, Robert is struggling to keep up with the amount of work needed to fund her lifestyle.
