19. There was originally only one film

The practice of books being split into separate films was practically unheard of back when The Lord of the Rings was first green-lit.

But the The Lord of the Rings as a whole was at one point only going to be one film.

It wasn’t until Peter Jackson went around Hollywood for weeks showcasing their work so far that New Line Cinema became interested.

Jackson had to ask around for a bigger budget

It was Robert Shaye – the founder of New Line Cinema – who viewed Jackson’s video.

New Line Cinema soon asked Jackson to make three films, granting him a budget of $281,000,000.

And he succeeded (phew!)

Now imagine trying to condense the story as we know it into just one film – quite literally impossible! It’s a good job Peter Jackson was successful.
