The opening theme for Knight Rider’s was actually composed by Stu Phillips.

It is one of the best theme songs the ‘80s has to offer, but its roots go back a lot further than the synth stylings it encompasses.

The theme song is actually based on a selection from Léo Delibes’s ballet Sylvia. The piece is specifically from “Cortège de Bacchus” from the ballet’s third act.

The song has been sampled by a number of artists, including Busta Rhymes and Lil’ Kim. But, the song owes its longevity to its status as a humble ringtone.

In 2005, Phillips won an award from BMI—which is a performing rights organization. The award was for the most downloaded ringtone.
