Sweet Treats That Tempted Our Taste Buds

Who remembers the chocolate machines, situated outside the local newsagents?  Insert 5p and out would come a ‘Bar Six’ or ‘Dairy Crunch’, which you’d scoff before you got home, so you didn’t have to share it with anyone.  If you preferred a chewy treat, then the ‘Bazooka’ bubble gum machine was a jaw-aching alternative.  Inside each wrapper was a cartoon strip – Bazooka Joe – which, for some reason, we enjoyed reading!

I bet you were all singing along to the advert that promoted this tasty chocolate bar with a brittle, green, minty centre – pretty much the same shade as an angry Incredible Hulk.  You just snapped off a section and popped it into your mouth, occasionally cutting your tongue with the sharp, sugary strands.  No sweat, it was part of the whole experience and we were tough in those days.

Here’s one to grab back from the sweet graveyard. I’ll give you a clue.  They were in a tube, individually wrapped, in stripey packaging and flavours included treacle, aniseed, humbug and pear drop.  Well done to you oldies for guessing right – Old English Spangles- different from the other Spangles which were flavoured blackcurrant, tangerine and barley sugar. They weren’t great for your teeth but fitted nicely into your school bag.

Why bother with an expensive box of chocolates when you could get all the excitement and taste in a handy chocolate bar? No, you’re not dreaming.  It really happened in the early 70s, when it was perfectly civilised to munch your way through 10 different, yummy centres without feeling the slightest bit guilty.

Whoever thought of the idea of Milk Tray in a bar should have received the Nobel Peace Prize, as it stopped all the arguments in our house.

A personal favourite of mine was pineapple cubes.  I’d buy two ounces from the sweet shop, lick the sugar off first and then eat a few in one go.  They were very zesty and made the roof of your mouth feel all weird – result!
