As we approached our teenage years, we became very fashion conscious. It wasn’t just the clothes. It was the hair, make up, jewellery, handbag …. I could go on and on. Chain stores provided everything we required, especially Littlewoods and Etam. I would spend at least an hour in each of these two shops, chopping and changing my mind as I didn’t have much money so didn’t want to make any costly mistakes.
Patchwork Leather Bag – Don’t be a square
If you wanted a leather bag but couldn’t afford one, the patchwork option was a great choice. It was soft and stylish and looked great with a long, belted coat.

Although gold jewellery was very ‘in’, ceramic, clip-on earrings and fake silver necklaces (spelling out your name) were more affordable and looked pretty good, I thought. You couldn’t go wrong, either, wearing half a dozen bracelets right up your forearm.
Chunky Bangles
The more bangles you wore in one go, the more style and finesse you had. An oversized ring on each hand and a Timex watch and you wouldn’t look out of place on the catwalk.

A pair of flared jeans and a tight, skinny ribbed polo neck was typically 1970s – but something was missing. I knew exactly what that was.
Chain Belt – For a reaction
The belt had to be placed loosely, just below the waist and clasped so a long bit hung down on one side.
