26. The very opening sequence is sneaky

In the very first sequence of the film, we see an old man walking about the war cemetery.

At the time, we don’t know that the man is actually Ryan – who survives the whole ordeal.

In fact, we’re tricked into believing that it’s Captain Miller, because when the camera pans into the old man’s eyes, it transitions to Miller about to land at Omaha Beach.

It’s what we all expected…

But there’s a very sneaky piece of cinematography in the scene. If you look closer, you’ll discover that you have the answer to who the person actually is from the very get-go.

This is because the button on the old man’s clothing displays the 101st Airborne. He’s not a part of Miller’s unit.

A sneaky choice made by the filming crew, but one that lets the audience know that Miller’s unit was successful from the start.
