Pictures have been released of an abandoned psychiatric hospital and it is probably the creepiest place I’ve ever seen.

The Rockland Psychiatric Centre, which is located in Orangeburg, New York was built in 1930 and opened a year later. The pictures show the remains of equipment used at the hospital where it appeared that patients were punished or treated using electric shocks and lobotomies.

It is hard to believe that the remains of the hospital once housed around 9000 patients. Many of the creepy photos taken shows original items which had been left since the hospital closed down.

Like many abandoned buildings, the walls are decorated with graffiti and it is unclear if the walls were recently defaced or if the graffiti ages from when the hospital was open.

The photos were taken by a brave photographer, known as Bullet. For those interested in cameras, Bullet revealed that he used a Nikon D7000 which was fitted with a Sigma lens.

He revealed this history of the place:

“Rockland began insulin shock therapy in 1937, followed by electroshock treatment and then lobotomies.

Seclusion rooms were another form of treatment which included a single frosted glass window, a single bed, and a toilet. According to previous patients, these were also used as punishment for unruly patients as well as ice sheet baths.”

The hospital was in its heyday during the 1950s and in 1959 it had around 2000 members of staff working there.

In the hospitals later years, from the 1970s onwards, it only operated to house a few patients and a large percentage of the building were abandoned.

Whilst the majority of the original centre is now demolished or unused, some of the hospital is still in use today. It specialises in treatments for patients with severe schizophrenia and depression.
