Early Life and Career

Sarah Ludden was only 9 years old when her mother died. She subsequently developed a close relationship with her stepmother Betty White who came into her life just 2 years after she lost her mother.

Sarah even worked as a mediator in fights between her parents and her older sister Martha. Martha had difficulty accepting Betty White. And it affected her relationship with both her parents.

Another thing to mention is Sarah’s stepmother Betty White never had any children and she said, she does not regret this.

“I’ve never regretted it. I’m so compulsive about stuff, I know if I had ever gotten pregnant, of course, that would have been my whole focus. But I didn’t choose to have children because I’m focused on my career. And I just don’t think as compulsive as I am, that I could manage both.”

The youngest Ludden started her career with audiology and dancing. However, she moved on to Karate later in her professional life. It was her love for dancing that pushed her into Karate in the first place.

During her career in Karate, she met a Chicago-based business owner Nancy Lanoue. They developed an instant liking towards each other. They began dating, and after some time, Sarah moved to Chicago.

Sarah founded the Thousand Waves Scholarship Fund. The find provides more than $100,000 tuition assistance to her students.

It was first a Women’s Gym by Nancy Lanoue and Jeanette Papas. It offered training in Seido Karate before Sarah came. In 1989, Jeanette died, and in 1991 Srah joined.

After Sarah joined, she started learning Seido Karate along with teaching Kajukenbo Kung fu. It was a form of martial art.

By 1995, the organization was providing mixed-gender programming. They were taught how to fight violent self-defence techniques.

Thousand Waves works as a non-profit organization. Its goal was diversity and equal access.

The organization teaches Karate and traditional martial arts programs to both adults and children. They teach self-defence. They arrange events and programs for issues of violence and empowerment.

The goal of the organization is to ensure healthy minds and bodies by fighting with violence and encouraging self-worth and compassion.

Sarah worked as co-director and head instructor of the institution along with Nancy Lanoue until 2019. After that, she chose to retire.

In this regard, her thinking did not align with her stepmother Betty White who chose to act until she could.
