Disney is more than just a media company; for most men and women Disney has been an integral part of their childhood. Many of us grew up watching classic Disney films like Cinderella, Snow White, Aladdin… the list really is endless. The best thing about these films is that you can pass them on for generations to come, they are truly timeless. One of the best known Disney characters and Walt Disneys official mascot is, of course, Mickey Mouse. If you love Mickey Mouse as much as I do then look no further because H&M has just released the most adorable winter sweater. The jumper which H&M recently put into stores has been dividing opinions for it’s ‘interesting design’, keep reading and let us know what you think.

This adorable sweater comes at the perfect time in our culture. We have become obsessed with nostalgia for an abundance of reasons that would be better looked into in a political essay than an entertainment article. From reboots to merchandise, companies are making a pretty penny off of our desire to time travel back to our childhood.

Whether it’s Pepsi, tricking us for the second time in recent history to buy un-dyed cola, or Kendall Jenner, convincing us to drop a whole day’s work of pay onto Calvin Klein branded underwear, we millennials are eating it up.

However, very few companies have as unique an opportunity to bank on nostalgia like the mecca of our childhood, Disney. While we may not want to dress like our favourite Disney Princesses anymore (only because it’s not socially acceptable or economically feasible to step out in a ballgown), most of us would love to adorn our homes and bodies with the faces of our favourite characters.

While it has always been possible to get awesome themed items at the Disney Store or at Disney Parks, they tend to be on the pricey side and are generally marketed more heavily towards children. Lately, there definitely more of a demand for Disney items that would appeal to an older, hipper audience.

Thus, more and more high street shops are collaborating with Disney to produce amazing adult clothing and homeware at a fraction of the price that you would have to pay in the Disney store. Just recently, fans went absolutely crazy when Primark released this Bambi themed satin pyjama set. It almost looks too good to just wear for bed!

When Beauty and the Beast was remade and released earlier this year starring Emma Watson, it seemed that fans fell in love with the film all over again. A ton of new merchandise was released but fans went crazy over one particular mug that was again, stocked by Primark. Seriously Primark, you are killing the Disney game!

Primark released the cutest teacup ever based on Beauty and the Beasts’ Chip, the charming teacup, and son of Mrs. Potts’, who befriends Belle and eventually helps her and her father escape the villagers. Fans justifiably went wild for the teacup, coming across the opportunity to turn their rooms into a familiar fairytale world. Unsurprisingly, it eventually ended up on Ebay for almost 10x the price!

For most Disney fans though, no other Disney character can compare to Mickey Mouse, and of course, Minnie Mouse. He was created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks in 1928. Originally the mouse was voiced by Walt Disney himself, until he got too busy in the studio. Mickey Mouse was the star of countless films and TV shows like the Mickey Mouse Club. The loveable mouse is probably one of the most iconic aminated characters of the last decade. Recently H&M released this pom-pom Mickey Mouse jumper which has been causing quite a stir.

This jumper should be a hit in theory. With a classic Mickey Mouse image, and the added 90’s effect of playful pom-poms, it hits all the right nostalgia spots. And while some fans agree, others were completely turned off by the look H&M went for.

A picture of the jumper was posted on the Disneyfind Facebook page with the caption:

I really LOVE this but I know opinion is divided – what do you guys think?

Several delighted Disney fans commented straightway “OMG I need this in my life” with many absolutely loving the jumper. However, some Disney fans were less than impressed.

Love Disney, but that’s hideous! What were they thinking with the pom poms!

So where did this sweater go wrong and how could it have been better? A quick look on the internet provides some interesting insight. Perhaps they got all the elements right, but didn’t execute it well enough to make the cutest possible jumper. However, it seems that others have tried and succeeded in making the pom-pom Mickey Mouse jumper a hit. Let’s see what they did to make it work.

This is a photo taken during Milan Fashion Week in 2015. The only differences between this one and the H&M design is the use of sequins, colouring, and length. This appears to be a jumper-dress instead of a jumper, which may lend to a more high-fashion look. Nevertheless, it proves that while some fans may not be huge fans of this odd yet adorable jumper, H&M has been taking their cues from the best in the game.

ASOS then did their own version of the pom-pom Mickey Mouse jumper for a Christmas collection, which seems to be closer to the high fashion look than the one later employed by H&M. It came at a higher price point then the H&M version, and didn’t seem to cause quite the same stir.  However, it did make the rounds on Pinterest, where users can save their favourite finds.

Shortly following H&M’s release, YouTuber, Brandon Lucas, showed users how to make their own pom-pom Mickey Mouse jumper. Her approach to the look is a little more subtle in a way that may appease fans who weren’t so fond of the H&M look. Instead of featuring a giant photo of Mickey Mouse surrounded by multi-coloured pom-poms, she makes her pom-poms into Mickey Mouse shapes and attaches them to a solid-coloured sweater.

However, with the right styling, H&M’s version of the pom-pom Mickey Mouse jumper could really work. As it is such a playful jumper, it should be paired with basic items to let it really stand out, such as the black jeans and white sneakers the model pairs it with in the above advertisement.

In these advertisements the sweater looks much more stylish then it did on the rack! By simply tucking the jumper in, it takes on a much more flattering shape. You could also follow this model’s lead and top off your look with colourful accessories to really tie it all together. The most important thing is to have fun with it and be yourself! If you are the type to buy this bold and quirky jumper, you’ll know exactly what to do with it to make it fit your style.

While not all Disney fans are sure of the Avante-Garde approach to this Disney jumper, there are sure to be loads of people out there who would seriously love this! If you are interested the jumper is also available in brown with black pompoms.
