Darren Robinson: Looking Back at the Fat Boys Star

Darren Robinson, also known as The Human Beatbox, was a part of the uber-popular rap group The Fat Boys. And it’s safe to say they did pretty well for themselves.

The band hit the big time in the 1990s, but Darren’s time was unfortunately running out.

He passed away in 1995 after he ran into complications with his health.

Let’s look back at his hugely successful career.

Darren Robinson: Finding Fame

The Fat Boys formed back in 1982 under the name of Disco 3. They quickly changed their name as they started to get more popular, and were happy to poke fun at their weight.

But the band were already beginning to struggle with their health at this point.

Darren Robinson said:

“Our manager at the time would actually tell us that we were putting on too much weight…

He would tell us to calm down on the weight gaining. But there was so much stuff happening and so many things going on at the same time that we didn’t see ourselves as being fat.

We just saw ourselves as rap stars who were performing and having fun.”

Their self-titled debut studio album hit the shops in 1984 and was Gold certified, reaching number six in the US R&B/Hip-Hop chart and number 48 in the Billboard 200 chart.

Passing

As the band were continually plagued by health issues, they went their separate ways in 1991.

While his weight had been perfect for his band image, it was causing Darren a lot of problems. He had lymphedema, and was struggling to catch his breath doing simple tasks.

He eventually had a heart attack while recording material at a studio with his brother Curt.

Curt said:

“He was doing one of his songs, and at the end he got off the couch and was climbing on a studio chair when he fell.

I tried to give him mouth to mouth, but he just couldn’t make it.”

Curt also said Darren had been trying to lose weight and was working on a Fat Boys reunion album.

Fans and musicians were quick to pay tribute to Darren, including rapper Eminem.

After Darren Robinson passed away, bandmates Damon Wimbley and Mark Morales briefly reunited in 2008. But tragedy struck yet again.

Mark Morales also ended up passed away in February last year at 52 years old. Former manager Louis Gregory confirmed the sad news on Twitter.

There wasn’t a word from last surviving Fat Boys member Damon Wimbley though. He hasn’t posted on his social media channels for years now, and spends his time living off grid.

Surviving Member

While not much is known about Damon these days, it’s clear he doesn’t want to end up with the same health issues as his band mates.

A few years ago, the former rapper hit the headlines when fans got wind of the star’s dramatic weight loss.

The rapper had hit a whopping 330 lbs at his heaviest, and he was struggling to even tie up his shoes.

Rebel Wilson Weight Loss: How did she pull it off?

After becoming breathless from everyday tasks, he decided on a complete lifestyle overhaul.

Speaking to the press about his weight loss journey, Damon said:

“When I saw that the weight started shedding, I decided to keep it off. I went back up to 240 and I never looked back from there. I said I’m never gonna go back to the way I was before.

I just went to the gym and started eating the right food. You only have one body so you gotta take care of it…

To this day I’m 167 lbs but it’s not easy to keep it off. It’s not an easy process but you gotta have dedication.”
