Beckett Richard Phelps: How Many Kids Does Michael Phelps Have?

When Michael Phelps retired from swimming in 2016, many people saw it as a major loss. The athlete remains the most decorated Olympian of all time, having won 28 medals over five Olympic Games.

However, the swimmer had a new adventure in store for him – raising a family. He married his long-term girlfriend, beauty queen Nicole Johnson in June of that year, and had already had one child together by that time.

But how many kids does Michael Phelps have?

Let’s find out.

Who is Beckett Richard Phelps?

Beckett Richard Phelps is Michael’s second son, born in February 2018. Michael and Nicole had been married just under two years when he was born.

Their first son, Boomer Robert Phelps, was born in May 2016, just before their wedding. They completed their family with Maverick Nicolas Phelps, who was born in September 2019.

After the birth of Boomer in 2016, the swimmer expressed hope that he would have more kids. He said:

“We definitely want more kids, it just depends on when. I’m sure I’m getting pressure. [We’re] trying to get moving on some things!

We’re going through life every day happy and blessed with what we have. But I hope to have more kids in the future.”

Announcing the birth of their second child, Beckett Richard Phelps, on Instagram in 2018, Michael said:

“Magical moments yesterday… Nicole and I would like to introduce Beckett Richard Phelps to the world! We had a healthy baby boy and a healthy mama. I truly do feel like the happiest man in the world.

Being able to build our family to now 4 (6 with doggies) is so incredible!”

But are Boomer, Beckett Richard Phelps, and Maverick interested in following in their father’s footsteps? According to the Olympian, he doesn’t necessarily want that for them.

He admitted:

“Maybe they’ll happen to go into swimming. I just don’t think it’s fair to them to have to live in my footsteps or what I’ve done. I just don’t think it’s right.”

Michael Phelps’ Wife

But who is Michael’s wife Nicole Johnson?

In fact, Nicole Phelps is a former Miss California USA beauty queen. She won the pageant in 2010 and competed in the Miss USA pageant in the same year.

But Nicole has brains as well as beauty. She graduated from the University of Southern California in 2007 with a Bachelors degree in Communication, with a concentration in sport and entertainment.

It was Nicole’s interest in the sport and entertainment industry that led to her eventually meeting the Olympian. They met sometime in 2007 at the ESPYs, an awards show that recognises achievement in athletics and sport.

However, their relationship hasn’t all been smooth sailing.

They reportedly broke up in 2011 and hit another rocky patch in 2014 when Michael was busted for driving under the influence.

Thankfully, the two made it work, with Michael saying he always knew that Nicole was the person he wanted to marry. He said:

“I was like, as long as I can tell her that, I can go through my life and be happy. Whatever happens, happens. Obviously, we worked through some things. There’s nobody in the world I would rather be with.”

Battling Depression

Earlier this year, Nicole opened up about the difficulties that Michael has had with his mental health. She was prompted to speak out about her worries after the tragic death of Kobe Bryant in January 2020.

Nicole admitted that she feared losing Michael to his depression:

“After Vanessa [Bryant] lost Kobe, all I could do was look at Michael and be like, ‘Can we please help you? Because if I lose you, I don’t know what I’m gonna do.’”

Michael has previously opened up about his struggles with his mental health. He voluntarily checked into a treatment center after his DUI in 2014, and also struggled after his retirement in 2016.

Michael admitted:

“I’ve had some scary ups and downs. Sometimes I just want to curl up into a ball in a corner. I need to be alone or I feel like I should be alone.”
