The Killing Tirade Started in 1984
The period during which Richard Ramirez committed his crimes, were known as the era of the Night Stalker. It marked the time during which the Night Stalker had begun his period of terror, where he committed the most callous and brutal crimes. His first murder took place on June 28th, 1984. Then, just under a year later, on March 17th, 1985 he committed his second murder – Dayle Okazaki.

Thankfully, 22-year-old Maria Hernandez who also lived there, managed to survive the shooting thanks to the keys which she held up in her defence. The Night Stalker’s horrendous tirade had begun and within hours of committing his second murder, he committed another just hours later. He removed a woman with force from her car, and then he shot her twice with his handgun. Tsai-Lian was rushed to hospital after the attack but tragically did not survive.
He Worshipped Satan
From a young age Ramirez had developed a fascination with Satan. He started to associate himself with Satan, believing he was acting through him and saying that he worshipped him. The Satanic symbol of the pentagram was something that became associated with the night stalker.

He sometimes used to declare his allegiance to Satan to his victims before he tortured or killed them. Once, he even left behind the symbol of the inverted pentagram with his victim’s body. He made it publicly known in court as he proudly held his hand up, which bore the symbol of the pentagram. His worship of Satan, and believing he was acting on behalf of Satan was something that he was disturbingly proud of, and something he wanted to be publicly known.
He Smelt Of Rotting Teeth And Wet Leather
One thing that everybody notices when they meet Richard Ramirez (aside from the obvious) is that he smells extremely bad. Personal hygiene has never been something that the Night Stalker took to. People have revealed that he did not brush his teeth – at all. One of his fellow class mates at school told Richard to either brush his teeth or close his mouth, because he could not stand the smell.

It clearly did not resonate with the serial killer, however, because he continued to let his teeth rot. Aside from the rotting smell that emanated from his mouth he also smelled, according to reports, like wet leather. Everybody who has met with Ramirez has agreed on the fact that he gives off a very powerful, nasty odour.
He Grew Up As A Christian
This is something nobody expects to hear regarding one of the most notorious serial killers of all time. But yes, he did grow up in a devoutly Catholic household. To the Ramirez family, God, Satan, Heaven and Hell were concrete concepts in their lives. Religion was just part and parcel of their everyday life.

In a Catholic household with religious values, it is obvious that the only concept that Richard Ramirez took from this was the concept of Satan. It seems that rather than adhering to the religion of his parents, his fascination only grew in one direction: his obsession and worship of Satan. Not only was he just obsessed with it – he believed that he and Satan were allies and had become connected with one another.
He Had No Pattern to His Crimes
Usually, when it comes to uncovering a serial killer or someone committing multiple crimes; there is a detectable pattern which can be followed. This of course helps pin the crimes to that person, and helps identify the extent of their crimes and which crimes were not committed by them (which ultimately helps catch them). But, in the case of the Night Stalker, there was no clear pattern at all.

In fact, they were so random, that the officer who suggested these were all the crimes of the same person was scoffed at. Police were convinced that his crimes were committed by multiple people – they thought the rapist was separate to the person committing the other crimes. His randomness was partly was made him so elusive, because for a long time nobody could believe he was one person. Nobody knew who he was. In 1985, he himself confessed that he was the Night Stalker.
He Was Beaten Up By Civilians
The day Ramirez’s identity was leaked, he initially remained unaware for a few hours. By this time, everybody knew who the Night Stalker actually was, and what he looked like. After this, he did not have long left before he was captured or spotted by civilians. That morning, he still did not know that his face was plastered over newspapers everywhere. He took a bus to visit his brother in Tucson, Ariz., on Aug. 30 but his brother wasn’t home.

So, Ramirez boarded another bus and headed back to Los Angeles. The police expected Ramirez to know by now, and they presumed the Night Stalker would be trying to flee L. A to try and escape the people closing in on him. By this time people were starting to recognise him and were pointing him out to other people. There was nowhere to go for miles around where nobody would recongise his face. Finally, the walls were starting to close in on the Night Stalker.
He Got Married In Prison
The idea of somebody marrying a viscous killer is pretty incomprehensible. But, apparently not for Doreen Lioy. Not only did she marry the Night Stalker – the first time she realised she was attracted to him (which was also the first time she’d discovered him), was when she saw him being arrested on the news. What’s attractive about a brutal murderer, we will never know. But – from then on, she struck up a romance with him via letters to prison and the pair became prison penpals.

For 11 years the pair conversed through sending letters to one another and occasional visits to prison. The correspondence remained constant throughout this time. After the 11 years – the pair got married – prison. The Night Stalker was allowed to have the marriage service in prison with Doreen Lioy. Understandably, there was public outcry by this unusual matrimony, because they were wondering (along with the rest of us) what she was thinking.
His Wife Had A Normal Life Before Him
What is even more shocking to discover about someone who married a serial killer, is finding out that Doreen Lioy had actually lived a very normal life thus far. She was a journalist, so she had a good job, and she also had good friends. Before the correspondence with the Night Stalker, she seemed to everybody to be a resident of the community like everybody else with nothing unusual about her.

She remained throughout the relationship to be adamant of Richard Ramirez’s innocence. She could not accept that her husband would have committed such crimes and publicly declared her support and faith in his character. She argued that she knew him best, and he could not possibly be the man the world thought he was. In 2009, the marriage came to an end. There was no public reason, but they never saw each other again.
Ramirez Died In 2013
Despite being sentenced to death for his many horrific crimes, the Night Stalker did not end up dying due to the death penalty. Ramirez spent 24 years in prison awaiting execution before he died. In June 2013, the Nigh talker died of cancer, specifically B-cell lymphoma, which is a type of blood cancer.

He was sentenced for his crimes in 1989. Ramirez was the 87th inmate in the state to die whilst awaiting executions. He also had many other significant conditions including chronic substance abuse and hepatitis C which is usually contracted by the use of IV drugs.
Ramirez Pleaded Not Guilty
Despite having confessed to being the Night Stalker when he was captured, and despite the overwhelming evidence against him, he pleaded not guilty. Not only was the evidence against him overwhelming, there was also DNA evidence pinning him to his crimes. There was no way he could get out of it – but he tried.

By this time, there was no chance of the Night Stalker not being convicted for his multiple crimes. But he pleaded guilty in an attempt to try and remain free from prison. He also tried to appeal the decision once his verdict had come back as guilty. As we know, Ramirez was desperate to stay out of prison and attempted any means of doing so.
He Was Abused As A Child
Ramirez had a VERY disturbed childhood. Besides his father’s aggressive temper, he was also abused by his cousin who had had a big influence over him from a young age. The pair had been extremely close since Ramirez was young. Miguel had served in the Vietnam war as a war veteran. He was violent, and extremely proud of his gruesome crimes.

He took a disturbing pleasure in showing Ramirez videos of him murdering people, and raping women. He taught the Night Stalker from the age of 10, how to kill. And more than that, he instilled in him a sadistic pleasure in killing and torturing people. The relationship between Miguel and Ramirez continued, even after Miguel had been incarcerated for 4 years.
The Night Stalker Dropped His Victim Off At A Petrol Station
Anastasia Hronas was one of the Night Stalkers youngest victims. When she was just six years old in 1985 when she was taken from her home and was sexually assaulted by the Night Stalker. She remembers how a window opened and the next thing she knew she was being ushered out of the window and abducted by Ramirez.

She recalled how at just 6 years old, Ramirez had appeared familiar, similar to one of her family and so she had gone half asleep with the killer. Anastasia was then taken to a house where she was sexually assaulted by him. She was then placed into a duffle bag where the Night Stalker took her to a petrol station and told her to go inside and tell them to ring her family to collect her.
A 6-Year-Old Survivor Helped Bring Him Down
Anastasia, the survivor of the Night Stalker’s sexual assault helped bring an end to his horrific crimes by helping to catch him. After the traumatic ordeal, the 6-year-old Anastasia went to a line-up to help identify Ramirez as the Night Stalker.

Her bravery is admired to this day as she stood in front of him and identified him. Knowing that he could not see her helped her greatly in being able to face him. Hronas was never asked to testify in court due to her age and the fact he faced the death penalty. But, thanks to Anastasia’s evidence the Night Stalker was identified and locked away.
He Was A Heavy Metal Fan
The Night Stalker loved heavy metal music. In particular, AC/DC. In fact, he was rarely seen without wearing AC/DC clothing of some kind. His love for the heavy metal band was even known in prison. One of his cell mates describes him as liking AC/DC, Eighties music, cars, beer and that kind of thing. In 1985, he actually left behind a hat bearing the band’s logo.

This piece of fan merchandise became an important piece of evidence in the murder investigation. This love of the band wasn’t a new thing, a childhood friend confirmed that he had always been into the band from a very young age. During the time, the media were drawing tenuous connections between the band and Ramirez, much to the bands dismay. Of course, these were just desperate attempts to uncover anything about the Night Stalker in a time and state of complete panic.
His Cousin Killed His Girlfriend Infront Of Him
We now know the background between Miguel and Ramirez, and how Miguel took pleasure in influencing Ramirez and exposing him to horrors and methods of violence, killing and torture. But at the age of 13, Miguel was arguing with his girlfriend while Ramirez was also present in the room.

In the middle of the argument, he pulled out a gun and shot his girlfriend dead. Ramirez witnessed this whole experience first hand. After this, the Night Stalker became very quiet and depressed. This was when he went to live with his Sister Ruth and her husband Roberto.
He Sometimes Slept In The Cemetery
Richard Ramirez’s father, Julian Ramirez, had an extreme temper. He would have outbursts, where he would have aggressive displays of temper. These affected the Night Stalker so much and made him feel unsafe and unable to sleep properly.

Once, Ramirez witnessed his own father beat himself black and blue with a hammer. To escape the austere environment, he used to sometimes go and sleep in the local cemetery. This used to take place when the Night stalker was just a young boy, around 10 years old. His father Julian, had grown up with an abusive father -he had been physically abused as a child.
He Got A Job At A Holiday Inn
As a teen he managed to get a job at a local Holiday Inn. He used this opportunity to break into the guests’ rooms and steal from them. He quickly drew the negative attention of the staff at the Inn. His behaviour and flirtation with women were noticed, and although he was scolded, he was given a key card to access rooms 3 months later.

For Ramirez, this was a mere opportunity to conduct his crimes. From theft, he then progressed to hiding behind curtains and watching women in their rooms. From watching them undress he them abused his position and used it to sexually assault women when he had broken into their rooms.
Members Of The Public Wrote to Him To Ty And Understand
When we engage with something it is natural to want to know everything about it. This, was a case that everybody around the world was following with bated breath. He was one of the most vicious killers of our time and people were so shocked and appalled by what he had done.

When people are following a case like this, the more information the better. People wanted to know about him and who he was. As humans we like to have reasons for things happening and to find out what caused them. And, what better than from the horse’s mouth itself. So, there were members of the public that wrote to Ramirez asking for information and wanting an answer to the age-old question – why? But they never received a reply from Ramirez.
Richard Ramirez Felt No Remorse
The Night Stalker never experienced even a glimpse of remorse. In fact, whenever he appeared on TV whether at a trial or in the news – he actually looked pleased with himself. There was no more confirmation needed to tell us he was a monster, but this really does demonstrate his callousness.

Having committed such unthinkable crimes never wieghed heavily on his conscious, or at all for that matter. Even his fellow inmates were shocked by his lack of refelction. One of his inmates revealed how some killers once they are in prison experince a perod of reflection on their past. But, not Ramirez. In fact, the inmates found him to have such little reflection that if you hadn’t known, you would have presumed Ramirez was in prison for petty crime.
He Received Letters From Female Admirers
This one is fairly hard to process. It wasn’t just Doreen vying for the attention of a brutal, serial killer. It may seem odd that relationships are struck up during a stay in prison, but even more difficult to fathom is that sometimes they start BECAUSE they are in prison. It is a real phenomenon where people write to convicted criminals in prison to try and strike up a romance.

And it turns out it wasn’t only Doreen. She was not the only woman vying for the attention of a serial killer. Shockingly, there was actually multiple letters from different admirers. It’s strange to think people out there are writing to declare their love for notorious criminals. But Doreen was by far the most persistent, and Ramirez replied back to her. In the 11 years he served in prison she sent 75 letters to him.
His Teeth Were Fixed In Jail
Despite being renowned as one of the worst and most horrifying serial killers to date, he is also renowned for the state of his teeth. The Night Stalker’s dental hygiene was less than 0 and so it had resulted in a mass of rotten teeth. But when you see pictures of the Night Stalker – most often you’ll see him with a fresh set of white teeth.

Why is this? The Night Stalker actually had his teeth fixed in jail, whilst awaiting his trial. Understandably people weren’t happy about this. The notorious monster is finally locked up, and then he is seemingly rewarded by having his teeth fixed. But as the decision was medical it was allowed. His teeth were in such a bad state that they were a health hazard.
His Name Came From A Vampire Series
It wasn’t Richard Ramirez that came up with his own name the ‘Night Stalker. The reporters of the Los Angeles Herald Examiner had been trying to come up with a label for the killer, a label of course, that would attract people to the paper and so as a result would sell more.

There were many ideas thrown about before they came up with one that stuck. things like the ‘Walk-In Killer’ or the ‘Valley Intruder’ and ‘Screen Door Intruder’ were amongst a few suggestions. The ‘Night Stalker’ came from a Tv series called ‘The Night Stalker’, which was about a vampire serial killer who terrorized the people of Las Vegas.
He Has A History Of Head Injuries
Ramirez as a young boy has had an unlucky scrape with injuries. As a child, he suffered two major head injuries. At the age of 2, a dresser fell on Ramirez. HIs head took most of the impact and he had to go to hospital to receive 30 stitches as a result. Then, when he was just 6, he had another head injury.

While he was at the park one day, he was knocked unconscious by a swing at a playground. Ramirez hadn’t seen the swing as he stood close by, before it collided with his head. This injury resulted in epileptic seizures which lasted until he was a teenager. The seizures after many years got less and less until he hit the teens, when the seizures came to an end.
He Was Into Drugs
Since the very young age of 10 – Ramirez had been smoking cannabis. He got into under his cousin’s influence who would smoke it with him. of course, starting drugs at such a young age put him onto a slippery slope early and perhaps unsurprisingly, he descended down a route of more drugs, which became increasingly more addictive and dangerous.

He experimented with a few kinds of drugs in this time. He has had an ongoing drug addiction from a very young age. Only a few years later, in his early teens he started using LSD. From here, he went further and further down a dark path and began to use cocaine.
Ramirez Threatened To Shoot His Prosecutor
Ramirez’s time in prison has never been made very public; what he was like and how he acted whilst he was there. But the Nigh Stalker’s violent tendencies did not stop once he got into prison. Being under the watchful eye of security guards constantly with less tools to cause harm, he wasn’t able to commit any more crimes. But this didn’t stop him trying. Somehow, he managed to get his hands on a gun whilst he was in prison.

Before he was about to face his persecutor, he hid the gun under his jacket and was going to shoot him. The prison guards searched Ramirez and retrieved the gun. Thankfully, he wasn’t able to killed him – but the intent was still there. Cell mates also found the Night Stalker was an aggressive inmate. He would shake their cell doors and verbally threaten them, pretty much trying in any way possible to torment and intimidate people inside the prison.
He Planned To Escape Prison Twice
As we know, his prison conduct was far from good. The Night Stalker also tried to escape twice. He came up with two plots to form an escape from prison. Luckily, they were stopped each time so his escape plan could never come to fruition. This information was not revealed until Ramirez dies in 2013.

Probably, so that the general public were not concerned that the Night Stalker would somehow end up back on the streets. Knowing the Night Stalker was locked away was the only reason many people could sleep at night again. Even the thought of his trying to escape would have been enough to cause uproar. It seems that Ramirez would have done anything to try and avoid going to prison or staying in prison.
A Female Juror Was Fatally Shot During Ramirez’s Trial
During the Night Stalker’s infamous trial, one of the jury members did not turn up. Further investigation revealed that she had actually been killed. Unsurprisingly, everybody at first assumed that Ramirez must have been involved; the coincidence seemed too great. It was thought that somehow the Night Stalker had managed to plan the attack on the jury member from prison.

It was assumed he was acting through somebody else but that he had planned it all. However, when the case was fully investigated the woman had tragically been killed by an ex-boyfriend. So, it turned out that Ramirez had nothing to do with the death of one of his female jury members.
A Young Boy Helped Bring Down The Night Stalker
It is amazing to think that a 13 year old child would help in bringing down one of the most notorious criminals we have seen. James Romero, at the time just 13 years old was up late in the garage after a family road trip when he heard footsteps in the gravel. He alerted his parents and bravely ran to catch a glimpse of the fleeing Night Stalker.

He saw right into Richard Ramirez’ face and caught sight of the car. From here on, he was essential in proceedings. First, he helped identify the car used that night, and eventually he was used in confirming the Night Stalker’s identity. Now, 45 years old James Romero is still accredited with helping solve the case of one of the most wanted men on earth.
He Was Troubled At School
He was never an ordinary teen at high school like everyone else, from an early age he had begun straying down a dark path of drugs and theft. But it definitely wasn’t clear at this point in his life what he would turn out to be. He attended Jefferson High School in El Paso, Texas and dropped out when he was just 15 – to turn to a life of crime.

But, according to his Principal at school, this was not expected. The principal revealed that Ramirez was a quiet and unproblematic boy, he was never naughty and key himself to himself in a reserved and shy way. He did however declare that he seemed to be a troubled boy and fell in with bad company. Despite not being naughty at school, he never applied himself to his studies as teachers felt he just did not care.
His Marriage Came To An End
After years of a very strange relationship and marriage, which was based solely on the letters sent between them and the occasional prison visit, the marriage came to an end. It seemed fairly inevitable that this marriage wouldn’t last the long haul. The reason is not publicly known, because it was not publicly declared at the time. But – the reason is fairly undoubtable given the timing of it.

After 2009, Doreen never saw him again. This, was the year that his first murder of the 9-year-old girl was finally pinned on him. This information must have been the final evidence she needed to realise that her husband was truly the monster the rest of the world knew him to be. After this, there was no more contact. By the time Ramirez died, he had not seen his wife for a few years.
His Parent’s Think He’s Innocent
Despite everything pointing against him, as well as overwhelming evidence, his parents continued to assert their son’s innocence. It was glaringly obvious to the world at this point that the Night Stalker was Richard Ramirez. Yet, they remained constant in their assurance of his innocence.

The parents could not believe that he would possible be capable of these things. Ramirez’s father later admitted that he did not know whether his son had committed these crimes. But what he did say he was certain of is that his son could not have possibly acted alone and committed all these acts solely. Of course, none of this was true and he was in fact the Night Stalker acting completely alone. It was clearly complete denial that kept them going along to his trials and supporting him the whole way.
Richard Ramirez was responsible for 14 killings in just over 14 months
The Night Stalker’s crimes occurred mostly occurred during the spring and summer of 1985. He killed at least 14 people during this time and raped and tortured at least two dozen more. In just 14 months Ramirez had filled L.A and the world with terror and because one of the evillest notorious serial killers of all time.

There was no pattern or method to his killing spree, his victims were of all ages ranging from children to elderly. His victims were a mixture of males and females. There was no reason to this sudden outbreak of terror that he inflicted upon L.A and San Francisco. Ramirez killed for the sake of killing, and because he felt no remorse about doing so.

We are all aware of the true horror of his crimes. His crimes were made up of the most abominable things that are incomprehensible to most people. The Night Stalker likes to torture his victims, and he lived to murder in the most grotesque way.

As well as guns and knives he also used items such as telephone cords to murder his victims. The scenes of the crime and the evidence left show how violent and evil he was. One of his victim’s head had nearly fully been decapitated as he had damaged it so severely. His crimes shook the world because of their extreme nature.
He Introduced Himself As The Night Stalker To His Later Victims
Unfortunate, Richard Ramirez seemed to be proud of his new name the ‘Night Stalker’. He wore it as a kind of title. This name became established and everybody everywhere knew of the name the Night Stalker. In fact, it was a name that caused absolute fear as soon as it was heard and a name that would be forever associated with terror.

With some of his later victims, Ramirez actually started to introduce himself as the Night Stalker. It is as though he wanted his crimes to be associated with his new name. When the police eventually caught him, he declared that it was him, he was the night stalker.
His Sister’s Husband Was A Peeping Tom
After the trauma with his cousin Miguel, witnessing the cold-blooded murder of his cousin’s girlfriend left him sullen and reserved. He started pushing his family away and became exceedingly distanced. So, he moved in with his siter Ruth and her husband Roberto.

But Roberto was actually a notorious peeping tom who taught Ramirez about watching people through their window – something which he unfortunately used later on in life. At this time also, he became interested in Satanism and started experimenting with it. Similarly, his drug use started to increase and he moved on to worse, more dangerous kinds of drugs.
His First Murder Victim Was 9 Years Old
The Night Stalker’s first crime set his path of horrendous, brutal killings. Richard Ramirez committed his first act of murder in the Tenderloin District of San-Francisco. She was just nine-years-old, a girl called Mei Lung. Her body was discovered in the basement of a hotel where Ramirez was living at the time.

Her body was found hanging from a pipe. Mei Lung had been raped, beaten and stabbed before she died. She had been with her brother, who walked away for a couple of minutes. When he returned, she was no longer there. This was the act of a monster, and the beginning of his terror. Shockingly, he was not connected with the crime until 2009.
