Peter Sawkins has been crowned the winner of The Great British Bake Off

The 20-year-old student has become the youngest ever winner of the Channel 4 baking competition, after he wowed judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood during Tuesday’s (24.11.20) final.
Speaking about his win, he said:
‘I can’t quite believe that I’m here. I can’t quite believe that I made it on the show, I can’t quite believe that this show happened. This is going to be a really huge chapter of my life, and what a way for it to end’.
Peter faced off against fellow finalists Dave Friday and Laura Adlington to bake creations including custard slices, walnut whips, and an impressive dessert tower Showstopper.
And after the result was announced, judge Paul Hollywood admitted it was one of the closest races to the finish line he’d ever seen.
He said:
‘How close was it with Dave and Peter? It came down to little bits like the crisp on a choux bun, it came down to flakes on a rough puff pastry, it was honestly that close.
‘Peter should be exceptionally proud. He’s the youngest winner we’ve ever had, and the only Scottish winner we’ve ever had’.

Fellow judge Prue also heaped praise on Peter, whom she has grown close to throughout the series.
She said:
‘You know, I’m terribly proud of Peter. I think of him as if he’s my grandson or something, because he’s such a nice guy and he’s so eager to learn. You can’t not like him’.
And despite losing out on the top spot by minute details, 30-year-old Dave wasn’t too disheartened about being named the runner-up.
He said:
‘I gave Peter a good run for his money, but he really deserves it. I’m not disappointed at all, if someone told me from the beginning that I’d be a runner-up, I’d take that all day long’.
