Beverley Callard: From The Cobbles To The I’m A Celeb Castle

Coronation Street actress Beverley Callard will be on this year’s I’m A Celeb but who is the lady behind the Corrie persona?

Why did she say yes to I’m A Celeb?

Beverley recently said goodbye to her character of 30 years, Liz McDonald in Coronation Street and decided now was the time to head to Gwrych Castle in North Wales for the TV show:

‘I felt that after 31 years Liz had run her course and normally, I would have said “thank you but no thank you”.

‘But this year, I decided to go for it. Doing I’m A Celebrity is an adventure and definitely out of my comfort zone!’

    She went on to say:

‘After lockdown because I had a hip operation I was still at home. But I am not good at being at home and I have not met any new people for months, so this chance will be really good.

‘Sitting around the camp doesn’t bother me because it is a chance to chat!’

Beverley will be joined by Sir Mo Farah, Vernon Kay and Giovanna Fletcher to name a few.

2020 has been quite the year for all of us thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, but for the ITV soap star it’s been made that much more difficult due to a botched hip operation.

Beverley had what was supposed to be minor hip surgery in March of this year but it left her with no soft tissue and hence her bones were rubbing together. The issue left her unable to walk and in considerable pain.

She had corrective surgery for the initial operation in July.

    In interviews she has said:

‘I can stand up – and I stand with most of my weight on my left leg.

‘If I stand up and pose for photos, I look normal.

‘But I can’t walk without crutches.

‘I have Jon on one side and a crutch on the other side. I’m learning and I’m battling’.

    Her husband, Jon McEwan added:

‘A slow recovery is a better recovery’.

    What’s her background?

Beverley Jane Moxon was born on March 28th, 1957 in Morley.

She became pregnant at 16 and hence married Paul Atkinson in 1974 but unfortunately she miscarried the baby.

Two years later the couple became pregnant again and had a daughter named Rebecca.

Beverley and her first husband divorced the following year.

In 1980 married David Sowden; sometime during the marriage Beverley had an abortion and the pair later split in 1988.

A year later she became pregnant with Steve Callard and the couple later married; in 1990 their son Joshua was born.

Beverley yet again found herself separating from her husband, this time due to Steve’s infidelity – he even cheated whilst Beverley was recovering from cervical cancer treatment!

The Coronation Street actress married her fourth husband, Jon, in 2010.

Other than Corrie, what else has Beverley Callard starred in?

Her television debut was as Angie Richards on Emmerdale which was then known as Emmerdale Farm!

Beverley is known for starring in Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps as Flo Henshaw.

She was also part of Coronation Street before she got her permanent role as Liz.
