The Good Morning Britain presenter – who was one of the show’s original judges alongside Simon Cowell and Amanda Holden when the programme launched in 2007 – is said to have been approached to return to the panel in order to freshen up the show and give it some “edge”.

A source told The Sun newspaper:

Britain’s Got Talent is one of the few Saturday night shows which continues to shine and stay relevant.

‘But all shows need refreshing, and Piers will certainly do that. He has been approached by two senior execs and, for his part, has said he would do it if the terms are right.

‘He will give the show back its edge and provide those brilliant water cooler moments. He will revitalise the series’.

If Piers does return to the show, likely in 2022 after his ‘GMB’ contract expires, it could mark the end of David Walliams’ stint on the panel.

The Little Britain comic – who has signed an extension on his contract until 2021 – reportedly threatened to quit the show if Piers was on the panel, while the 55-year-old broadcaster turned down an approach to stand in for Simon Cowell after his back injury, telling producers he wouldn’t sit alongside David, who he branded an “insufferable twerp”.

Diversity leader Ashley Banjo instead took Simon’s place alongside David, Amanda, and Alesha Dixon for the ‘BGT’ live semi-finals and final.
