Spencer Matthews’ Brother: What About Michael?
Michael Matthews was older than his brother Spencer, but unfortunately this brave man lost his life at the young age of 22.
Michael lost his life on May 13, 1999. He was trying to descent to Camp 4 from the summit of Mt. Everest. Although he was an experienced climber, he ended up losing contact with his team because of the bad weather.
His father immediately knew what happened to his beloved son. He said:
“Michael was last seen by his climbing colleague about 600-700ft below the south summit descending in poor weather. An atrocious gale blew in and he became detached from his colleagues. His oxygen would have run out within a couple of hours of him becoming detached.”
How Did He Die?
Spencer Matthews’ brother James and his dad said to the media:
“We believe that my son’s life was given away and our whole purpose as a family has been to alert other families to these circumstances [and the] avoidable dangers presented both by the mountain and also by some of the professional people involved in guided climbing.”
Unfortunately, his body has never been found. This means that he is still resting on the top of the Mount Everest, where he found his death while showing the world his courage.
