What was her early life like?..

Mary Berry was born in Bath on March 24th, 1935.

When she was just 13 years-old, Mary got polio and spent three months in hospital. The illness left her with a twisted spine, a thinner left arm and weaker left hand.

Her time in hospital ‘toughened [her] up’ and she learnt to make the most of every opportunity.

She has admitted that she had poor academic abilities but she shone in domestic science class.

She continued to study food, going to Bath College of Domestic Science with the subject catering and institutional management.

When her career started…

Her first job was showing customers how to use electric ovens.

However, her dream was to move out of her home – her parents wouldn’t let her do so until she was 21.

When she was 22 she applied for a job at the Dutch Dairy Bureau.

She managed to convince her manager to pay for her to obtain a professional qualification at Le Cordon Bleu cooking school in France.

In 1966 she began her journey as a food writer when she became the food editor of Housewife magazine.

She then went on to become Ideal Home magazine’s food editor from 1970-1973.

In 1970 she released her first cookbook , The Hamlyn All Colour Cookbook.

Over the years she has since sold over five million cookbooks, releasing more than 75 books in her lifetime.

What else has increased Mary Berry’s net worth?

Mary is an advocate of an AGA cooker and even started cooking courses for AGA users.

In 1994, Mary launched her own product range with her daughter, Annabel.

Originally, the products were only sold at her AGA cooking school, but later branched out to different retailers in Britain as well as Germany and Ireland.

The company was recently sold for £2.5 million which was split between her children.

Mary’s TV career…

Despite always being a firm household favourite, Mary’s current popularity came from the iconic TV show, The Great British Bake Off.

Alongside Paul Hollywood, she was chosen to be one of the judges with Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins as presenters.

The baking competition series isn’t the only show Mary has starred on, for example, she has had many solo series including: Mary Berry Cooks, Mary Berry Everyday and Mary Berry’s Country House Secrets.

It has been rumoured that Mary was paid £70,000 per series of The Great British Bake Off.

When the show moved to Channel 4 in 2016, she was allegedly offered £7 million to judge the show. However, she decided to stay with the BBC, stating:

‘It was suggested what would happen if I did go to Channel 4; what I would get, the advantages.

‘But I didn’t ever have a meeting with them. I’d made up my mind. To me it’s an honour to be on the BBC. I was brought up on it.

‘It was the BBC’s programme, it grew there.

‘So I decided to stay with the BBC, with Mel and Sue’.

Her personal heartbreak…

In 1966, Mary married Paul Hunnings.

Together the couple have three children: Thomas Alleyne March, Annabel Mary March and William John March. The latter of her sons passed away in a car accident in 1989, when he was just 19 years-old.

Due to this, Mary is a patron of the charity, Child Bereavement UK.
