His early life…

Duane Lee Chapman was born on February 2nd 1953 to Wesley – a welder who became a bail bondsman – and Barbara – a Sunday school teacher.

When he was just fifteen years-old he ran away from home and joined the Devils Diciples, an outlaw motorbike club.

He was charged with first degree murder in 1976; he was waiting for his friend, who shot and killed Jerry Oliver (69), while he was in the getaway car. His friend shot Jerry after there was some trouble during a cannabis deal.

Duane was sentenced to five years in a Texas prison, but in the end only served 18 months.

During his time in jail, he allegedly tackled an inmate who was going to be shot after he had tried to escape. The positive reaction to this act – specifically from a Corrections Officer – convinced him to become a bounty hunter.

How he got international success…

Duane ‘Dog’ Chapman captured Andrew Luster, the heir to Max Factor cosmetics, on June 18th, 2003. Andrew had fled from the United States when he was on trial for 86 counts of raping and drugging women.

They caught the make-up heir in Mexico, but Andrew wasn’t the only one to be arrested, as Duane and his team – made up of his sons Leland and Tim – were arrested as bounty hunting is illegal in America. Andrew was sent back to California but the Chapmans had to work slightly harder to convince the Mexican police of their innocence. They were eventually released.

Dog was featured on the show, Take This Job, which explores people with strange careers. His popularity on the show convinced the production company to give him a spin-off show discussing his life as a bounty hunter.

In 2004, A&E premiered the show, Dog the Bounty Hunter. The show ran for eight series before it was cancelled in 2012.

CMT decided to offer Dog a new reality TV show Dog and Beth: On The Hunt. Dog, his wife Beth and his son, Leland, went around the United States giving advice to failing agencies, who specialise in bail bonds, on how to make their businesses successful. As well as helping them capture the most wanted fugitives.

His personal life…

Duane has been married five times and has twelve children.

His eldest child, Christopher, was unknowingly born to Dog – he was serving an 18-month prison sentence at the time. The child’s mother, Debbie, committed suicide in 1978 and Christopher was subsequently adopted. It is reported that he struggles with drug and alcohol addictions, and takes part in a lot of hate crimes.

Dog was married to his first wife, Lafonda from 1972-1977, when she filed for a divorce after he was jailed for murder. Together the pair had two children, Duane Lee Chapman, II and Leland.

He had three children with his second wife Ann: Zebadiah, Wesley and James. Zebadiah died as a baby and Ann took her other two sons with her when she moved to Utah. Wesley and James reconciled with their father in their adult years.

Just days after meeting, Duane and Lyssa married in 1982. Lyssa was still married to her husband, but the pair were separated. Dog has stated that he offered his third wife $1000 to have a child with him and she agreed. Together they had three children, Barbara (who passed away in 2006), Tucker and Lyssa.

His fourth wife was Tawny. They married in 1992 after meeting four years earlier, when Duane arrested her on drug possession. She later became his secretary. The pair separated in 1994 and finally divorced in 2002.

The love of his life…

In 2006 he married Alice Elizabeth, ‘Beth’. The pair had been on and off for years, and even had two children together: Bonnie and Garry. Duane adopted Beth’s daughter, Cecily and also helped his wife to find her son Dominic, who she had when she was a teenager.

On June 26, 2019, Beth passed away due to throat cancer. This was her second time fighting the disease.
