Common Makeup Mistakes Most Of Us Are Making

For the sake of your vanity (and sanity) – here are 14 of the most common makeup mistakes – and, of course, how to fix them.

‘What was I thinking, leaving the house in that purple eyeshadow, caked in orange foundation and covered in murky bronzer…!?’

Don’t worry – every single one of us has browsed over our Facebook tagged photos and cringed inside at the very sight of our own faces – we’ll ALL been there. Many a time.

Yep, there of those kind of mistakes (the ones you untag sharpish) that are glaringly obvious… but there’s also the type of makeup mistakes – the subtle ones – that you still might be doing every single day without even knowing it.

Here they are…

14. Clumpy Lashes

Why it’s wrong: Clumpy, clustered lashes is one of those looks that is just downright scary. Spidery lashes aren’t pretty – not even if you’re at a ’60s fancy dress party.

How to fix it: We’ve all been taught to wiggle our mascaras back and forth to achieve perfect lashes, but try to run the wand from the root of your lashes to the tip.

13. Too Much Lip Liner

Why it’s wrong: ‘Too much lip liner? Not possible’, I hear you cry. But with thanks to Kylie, the dramatic, cartoon-like pout has gone too far.

How to fix it: Liner is a great way to amplify your smile, but for everyday wear, work a little product outside your lip line – don’t overdo it.

12. Blush In The Wrong Place

Why it’s wrong: Accentuating the apples of your cheeks might’ve worked when you were pre-14, but nowadays we’ve all moved on.

How to fix it: In the same way as Em Rata, dust your blush over your upper cheekbones to lift the face.

11. Not Blending In

Why it’s wrong: Unless you’re going for the Lindsay Lohan in court circa 2010 look, you NEED to blend in your makeup properly.

How to fix it: With great contour, comes great responsibility… so, blend, blend, blend. We’ve all been told it time after time – and, (yep, we’re telling you again) blending is your best friend!

10. Attempting Complicated Makeup Looks

Why it’s wrong: You know how the saying goes… don’t run before you can walk.

How to fix it: Strobing, contouring, baking, cut crease… master the basics first before you attempt the MUA territory.

9. Applying Lipstick To Naked Lips

Why it’s wrong: You wouldn’t apply foundation without primer, would you? Please, tell us you wouldn’t do it…

How to fix it: Unless you’re going for the dry, crusty, crinkled lipstick look, apply a light face moisturizer to the lips before letting it soak in and putting on your lippy.

8. Choosing A Wrong Coloured Foundation

Why it’s wrong: Don’t be in denial about your tan, you might’ve been abroad for 3 weeks but that shimmery bronze you once had is long gone.

How to fix it: When on a mission to find the perfect match, don’t smear it onto your hands, try it on your neck or cheek – after all, that’s where you’ll be wearing it. Sometimes a good foundation in one or two shades lighter than your natural skin tone is a good option, then you can jazz it up with a bit of bronzer!

7. Overusing Mascara On The Lower Lashes

Why it’s wrong: Under eye is a touchy area for many of us – wrinkles, dark shadows, soreness, you name it – we just don’t want to draw attention to it.

How to fix it: We’re not saying don’t touch up those lower lashes, just don’t put too much on!

6. Applying Foundation Wrong

Why it’s wrong: Ever noticed those annoying little hairs on your face? Well, they might be made more visible if you’re applying your foundation in the incorrect motion.

How to fix it: Instead of applying it in upward strokes, use your brush, fingers or sponge to pat it on gently. And Voila!

5. Stop Eye Glitter Getting Everywhere

Why it’s wrong: We’ve got nothing against you swathing glitter all over your eyes, but it’s likely that with every blink, you’ll leave your face looking like a kindergarten craft project… but don’t worry, it’s a common makeup mistake.

How to fix it: Apply you glitter before your base makeup (that’s your foundation, concealer and contour).

4. You’re OTT-ing Everything

Why it’s wrong: We all know that when it comes to dressing for an occasion, it’s EITHER boob or leg – you can’t do both, can you? The same rules apply to your makeup too…

How to fix it: We know it’s hard, but pick one – smoky eyes or a bold lip – but avoid doing both.

3. Lining Your Bottom Eyeline With Black Liner

Why it’s wrong: If you want brighter, doe-eyes – lining your waterline can make your eyes look narrower.

How to fix it: Try using a paler liner to open up your eye.

2. Visible White Powder

Why it’s wrong: Another common makeup mistake is visible white powder. Translucent pressed powder is a god send, but if mis-treated, it’ll look more eerie than elegant.

How to fix it: Opt for a really lightweight powder and after dipping your brush into it, shake excess product off before applying.

1. Your Brows Are Too Dark

Why it’s wrong: There’s someone in every friendship group who goes dye-giddy when it comes to their brows… bleach blonde hair and jet black brows – not a good look.

How to fix it: Your brows should be two shades darker than your hair colour. Also make note of your eye colour, sometimes a lighter brow looks better if you’ve got blue eyes!
