Liam McGough– His Rise To Fame And Where He Is Now!

There’s been countless housemates who have become Big Brother royalty, but the housemate in question here is Liam McGough who entered the house in series 8…

As just a tree surgeon from Lanchester, County Durham he didn’t do too bad emerging from the Big Brother house £100,000 richer – without even winning the tv show!

Dubbed the ‘hottie’ of the series, he ended up receiving 19% of the overall winning votes, putting him in 3rd place, behind the winner Brian Belo and runner ups twins ‘Samanda’.

An avid Tweeter and partial to an upload on Instagram, we’ve been able to keep up with Liam’s shenanigans since leaving the BB house. Let’s take a look at his rise to fame and what he’s getting up to now, post- fifteen minutes of fame…

    2007- Big Brother

Back where it all started. We’re throwing it way back here- to big brother series 8 (given there was 18, Liam qualifies as one of the OGs).

He entered the house when he was just 22 but managed to win over the public, regardless. He left the house £100k heavier and with the support of the public behind him, who really took to his charm and kind nature.

2007- He Took To The Stage On Cirque De Celebrité

When asked back in 2007, after just emerging from the house, he was asked what he’d been up to:

“All sorts really, I’ve never stopped. I did the Premier awards, I’ve done this – Cirque De Celebrité – I’ve done probably about 50 personal appearances. I’ve done local charity events, newspaper interviews, photo shoots. I had a column in Now magazine… God my feet haven’t touched the floor!”

Then next up for him was the Celebrity Circus (is this show a myth, or does anyone actually remember it?!)

Liam was voted in to the show above contender Rebecca Loos (thrust in to the spotlight after her affair with David Beckham).

Unfortunately, he was voted in and also OUT of the show in the same night, meaning his time in the circus was abruptly ended:

“I suppose I’m a bit disappointed to be voted in and voted out in one night… I suppose the high-wire was probably going to be my favourite discipline, it’s what I was best at.”

    2014- He Found ‘The One’

With looks like his, there’s no doubt he had the pick of the bunch, especially after leaving such a popular show with a wad of cash. He even said it himself:

“I don’t do too badly with the women… I’m not Brad Pitt, but I’m not Quasimodo’s brother.”

Despite all the attention he received, he actually resented it:

“I’m really dubious about girls and what their intentions are.”

He’s been with his other half for as long as his Insta goes back (and that’s a GOOD few years). It seems he’s settled in his long-term relationship, and coming up to 34 there might just be a proposal on the cards soon. It’s good to know that a ‘reality star’ didn’t go down the old ‘Lothario’ path like the rest of them.

    2016- From Lanchester To Manhattan

Not a lot surfaced on the old world wide web about what Liam was up to after initially leaving the house, but what to do know is his passion for trees never left him.

So much so, he took his love for the outdoors further than his hometown of Lanchester- all the way to NYC in fact; Liam worked with none other than Four Seasons Hotels on the upkeep of the shrubbery of roof tops in Manhattan. What an upgrade!

2016- Vented His Opinion About A Changing Big Brother

It might have been cancelled now, but in its heyday, it was once of the biggest and most anticipated shows on TV. Every time a new series would roll round, we’d be waiting eagerly for the line ups to be released and for the drama to unfold.

The ‘social experiment’ aspect of the show is what set it apart from your typical ‘reality’ show. Plonking a group of civilians, or celebs, in to an enclosed space for a few weeks proved to yield GREAT TV. Sometimes pushed to the extreme, but often just far enough for us at home to be entertained and the show to get the ratings they needed to carry on with its success.

All good things have to come to an end as they say, though, and in 2018 Big Brother’s time came. Liam pointed out the cracks in its production back in 2016:

“It’s lost that social experiment edge that it once had, there’s too many people go on it now whose main goal is endless self promotion.”

He pointed out that it was perhaps the broadcasting change that evolved the show in the wrong way:

“I think the format of the show an the twists are a lot more severe since the switch to Channel 5.”

The problem more recently with Big Brother was that contestants mental health was being sacrificed at the hand’s of the show’s attempt to keep it entertaining and fresh, after nearly two decades.

“Some of this current series has been difficult to watch. When viewers’ entertainment comes at a cost of someone’s mental being that doesn’t sit well with me.”

    Regardless, Liam Has NO Regrets

When quizzed if he regrets his decision to be a part of one of the earlier series, he was adamant he didn’t:

“Absolutely not. I never thought I’d get on Big Brother so to be part of it was fantastic. Also I’m glad I was on it when I was; when it was more about normal people as opposed to people who are already semi-famous for doing something or being on another show.”

    The £100k certainly wasn’t a regret!

    NOW- Back To His Roots

Pardon the pun. Liam now runs his own business ‘The Tree Guy’ who specialises in tree and vegetation management, who have a ‘genuine care for trees’.

From his social medias he seems to get a thrill out of this job- climbing up trees can’t be one of the hardest jobs in the world anyway, can it?

With a heavy heart we say farewell today to Pat our work experience lad for the last 2 weeks. We have loved working with him and he is welcome back any time. Hard working, kind and polite a great fit to the team. pic.twitter.com/I6GVe4wYan
