Remember The Goonies Cast? Here’s Them Now!

We’re delving into the lives of the Goonies Cast and having a look at what they’re up to nowadays…

Okay, we will admit it: a film about a group of kids calling themselves “The Goonies” attempting to find a way of saving their homes by following a treasure map to locate One-Eyed Willy’s long lost treasure; it doesn’t exactly scream smash hit movie, especially for decades beyond its release.

But that’s precisely what the film became.

The Goonies, whether you have seen this adventured based film or not, you cannot deny you have at least heard of this banger.

The 1985 film – directed by Richard Donner – was a hit with audiences and people alike, so much so that it is still loved today – despite it being THIRTY THREE WHOLE YEARS since it was released.

33 years is a long time, let alone in Hollywood. And yes of course, the innocent (yet slightly obnoxious) children are now fully grown adults and the Fratellis are no longer as young as they were.

It’s hard to imagine when we watch The Goonies how much they have changed! Well imagine no more my friends, we have got you curiosities covered…

Mikey (Sean Astin) – THEN

Also known as Mikey, leader of The Goonies, Sean’s character got the treasure and escaped the Fratellis, but where is he now?

Cast in The Goonies in his early teens, Sean Astin won lots of fans with his portrayal.

He was a likeable, confident character; but also quite a little know-it-all, who seemed to lead his friends into danger with no thought for their safety! Well they found the treasure and Mikey came back a hero. The Fratellis were gone and the kids all survived (despite the best efforts of the Fratellis and the many tunnel traps).

They saved their houses from foreclosure and all lived happily ever after.

As Astin grew up, he continued to get roles in films and tv shows such as Like Father Like Son and White Water Summer. In 1994, Astin and his wife received an Oscar nominee for their short film Kangaroo Court.

But he must have only been like 12… well, he was in fact 23, which is still an impressive age to get a nomination!

In the early 2000s, Sean Astin starred as Samwise Gamgee in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

The Goonies adventure sequences clearly put him in prime position for the role. 15 years later and still Astin is hunting for treasure.

After the highs of Samwise Gamgee, where was Astin to go next? Now in his 30s, he was surely in the prime of his career!

Austin took advantage of his looks to play the lead role in Adam Sandler’s rom-com: 50 First Dates. It’s hard to believe this man and Mikey are in fact the same person! Mind blown.

Most recently, Astin has appeared in hit show Stranger Things – he’s certainly no stranger to adventure!

The Goonies was clearly the start of a long and successful career. Who would have thought that Bob Newby and Mikey Walsh were the same actor!

Brandon (Josh Brolin) – THEN

Also known as Brandon, or Brand, the older brother of Mikey was someone probably every child/teenager had a crush on when we watched the film!

So he was a bit of an idiot in The Goonies, but we don’t really care about that as teenagers!

We thought he was cool and so romantic with Andy, and we loved their kiss!

We’ve got to admit, we were all a little envious of Andy in this scene. But then we remembered their lives were in peril, most certainly putting things into perspective.

So, where now for Brolin, who had stolen the hearts of teen viewers and how well would he age?

Brolin didn’t do too many films in the 1990s and 2000s, but he was still active on screen and performing in theatres. These included Mimic and Nightwatch. But the best was yet to come in the form of Milk

Sporting a different look, Brolin appeared in Milk in 2008 which was a huge critical and commercial success.

Brolin bagged himself an Academy Award nomination for supporting actor in the process – go on Brand!

After his Milk success, Brolin would go on to appear in some of the most popular films of the 2010s…

Now in his 40s, Brolin is still looking fine. And not just that – his acting is pretty fine too! Brolin has had many roles in Marvel films, including Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Age of Ultron. In 2018 he starred in Deadpool 2 and Avengers; Infinity War. His career is certainly still on the up!

Mouth (Corey Feldman) – THEN

Also known as Mouth, Feldman was a hugely well-known child actor, with his role in The Goonies being just one of them.

I think we can see where he got his nickname “Mouth” from! How did so many jewels fit in such a small child?! Not sure I would fancy having centuries old treasure covered in dirt and germs in my mouth though…

With his youthful looks, it is easy to see why Feldman became such a child star.

Even before The Goonies, he had starred in The Fox and Hound and Gremlins… and he didn’t stop there. Feldman became one of the most recognisable child stars with his roles in these big films…

It is probably his most famous role, even though he was only in his mid-teens during filming… So he didn’t plummet out of sight never to be seen on screen again, but his later film roles didn’t live up to his child promise.

He starred in a range of different smaller films including National LampoonVoodoo and Busted.

Feldman hasn’t had the smoothest career, as he has battled a drug problem from an early age.

Feldman today is hardly recognisable from his days as Mouth. It may be because he doesn’t have treasure in his mouth…maybe…

Stef (Martha Plimpton) – THEN

Playing Stef in The Goonies, friend of Andy, Plimpton wasn’t officially part of “the Goonies” gang.

Plimpton (pictured in the centre) often played “tomboy roles” as child/teenager. And the character Stef was no different. The first time we see her, she has her head submerged in water and pulls out a crab with her mouth – slightly strange!

Plimpton didn’t abandon the acting world entirely though! Far from it as she started appearing in more theatre productions.

On the stage, Plimpton received many plaudits and Tony Award nominations. Clearly she made the right choice!

The theatre productions in which she received her nominations were Top Girls, Coast of Utopia and Pal Joey. Not content with her theatre success, Plimpton was also nominated for Emmy Awards for her roles in Law and Order: SVU and Raising Hope.

In 2012 she then went on to win an Emmy for her role The Good Wife. Plimpton is one who definitely built on her Goonies success. She has certainly grown up since her Stef days!

Andy (Kerri Green) – THEN

As cheerleader Andy in The Goonies, Green was older than the rest of the gang.

Like the rest of us, her character had a crush on Brand aka Josh Brolin.

However, unlike us she followed him on an adventure and ended up kissing him *not jealous at all*…

Just one year after The Goonies, Green was widely praised for her portrayal as Maggie in Lucas. Starring alongside Charlie Sheen, they would meet again in 1987 film Three for the Road.

Well you’ll be glad to hear that Green hasn’t left the acting world! Green has co-founded a film production company called Independent Women’s Artists. She seems much more focused on being behind the camera rather than in front!

Although it is a loss to our screens, she’s smashing it behind the scenes and is still making her mark!

So from teen actress to producer…and still looking just as stunning thirty three years after The Goonies!

We can’t wait to see where the other cast members like Mama Fratelli (Anne Ramsey), Sloth (John Matuszak), Chunk (Jeff Cohen) and Data (Jonathan Ke Quan) (from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom) look like in ten years time…
