A suburb of Liverpool, West Derby has been around since the Vikings and produced the first drummer for The Beatles, Pete Best – not too shabby.

Sadly though, it is one of the places thought to have biggest illiteracy problems in England.

11. Poplar

Down in the East End of London, it’s a surprise to see this in the list as Poplar contains part of the high flying Canary Wharf.

But we’ve placed it tenth on our list due its high percentage of people without any qualifications.

10. Barking

Sticking with East London, this town is consistently put in the top 10 of worst places to live.
