We all remember the advert don’t we?

Even now, after all these years, every time I see a loaf of Hovis bread, I think of the little boy pushing his bike up Gold Hill. It was one of the most memorable adverts of the 20th century, don’t you think? The 1970s brought us a lot of memorable adverts, this being one of them.

But whatever happened to the little boy pushing the bike?

Well, Carl Barlow was only 13 when he pushed the bike up the big hill in Dorset. Now 40 years on, he returned to the place where it all started. Back in 2013 when he returned to Dorset, he was invited as a celebrity to turn on the town’s Christmas lights.

The advert which was directed by Ridley Scott.

Now a famous Hollywood director, Ridley Scott showed Carl with a little bowl haircut, under a flat cap struggling up the hill with a bike basket full of Hovis bread. After delivering the bread, he speeds down the hill at super speeds with his legs up out in the air side by side.

The advert won a lot of awards and has been voted the all-time favourite advert for the British public.

Carl went on to become a fire fighter and retired not too long ago after a 30-year career with the London Fire Brigade.
