Who’d have thought that we’d actually end up loving the soap operas as much as our mamas? The multitude of affairs, marriages and murders give us enough drama to feel as though we also live in Albert Square; anyone else super grateful that they don’t?!

Eastenders first aired on BBC in 1985 – meaning it has been on our screens for nearly 35 years! It was initially created as BBC execs wanted a show that would attract the same sort of audience that Coronation Street on ITV were getting.

Actually, producers at Granada Television, an off-shoot of ITV, allowed the initial writers of the soon-to-be Eastenders, Julia Smith and Tony Holland, full access on the set of Coronation Street for a whole month to truly understand how a continuing drama works.

Initial names for the show were ‘Square Dance’, ‘Round the Square’, ‘Round the Houses’, ‘London Pride’ and ‘East 8’. ‘East 8’ was the name that stuck (inspiration being taken from the Hackney postcode E8), however, when Smith and Holland would say the name to others, people thought it was actually called ‘Estate’!

Hence, the fictional postcode of E20 was created. Smith eventually decided upon Eastenders after she was on the phone to Holland and said:

‘Do you have any real East Enders on your books?’

How well do you know the goings on of Albert Square and its residents?
