Memorial Statue Of Late Queen Unveiled: Tribute to Her Majesty

On the anniversary of what would have been her 98th year, a memorial statue of the late Queen has been unveiled, surrounded by bronze depictions of her cherished corgis. This public celebration brought together the joyful acclamations of onlookers as well as a unique assembly of almost fifty corgis from The Welsh Corgi League.

Casting a striking presence, the seven-foot sculpture is positioned proudly on public display, delighting those present not just with the image of the youthful sovereign, whose stature reached 5ft 4in, but also with the clever addition of characterful corgis interweaving with her depicted garment’s folds.

Artist Hywel Pratley created the tribute with the intention of celebrating the monarch’s extensive and extraordinary seven-decade service. His work masterfully captures the Queen’s well-documented partiality for the Pembroke Welsh corgi breed.

Regarded as the personification of Britain’s smallest county, the likeness of the Queen and her canine companions now takes pride of place outside the library in the market town of Oakham in Rutland. This bronze ensemble does not merely represent Royal prominence but captures a personal aspect of the Queen’s life—her dedication to her pets.

The day also saw King Charles and Queen Camilla displaying a cheerful disposition as they attended a church service at Crathie Kirk near Balmoral.

During her lifetime, the sovereign had an estimated 30 corgis and dorgis, which reflected her persona publicly and privately. Her fondness for the breed was apparent, illustrated through photographs taken at various royal engagements.

The legacy of the Queen’s corgis is rich and provides a glimpse into her more personal and less formal characteristics. Her first corgi, acquired at the tender age of seven, marked the beginning of a lifelong companionship with the breed. The narrative progressed with Susan, the corgi that even accompanied her on her honeymoon, and continued through subsequent generations of the corgi dynasty.

Spectators acclaimed the permanent memorial as ‘fantastic’ with the Welsh Corgi League contributing to the day’s unity and some adorned their corgis for the occasion—one wearing a bow tie added a touch of ceremony to the event.

Spectator’s Reactions To The Statue Unveiling

The unveiling elicited not only human applause but also the approving calls of the corgi attendees. The Queen’s connection with these dogs was amply captured by her appearances with them throughout her life and her underlying sense of warmth and humour during the statue unveiling of the late Queen.

This historic event thus served the dual purpose of honouring the Queen’s memory and celebrating her well-known affection for her corgi companions. As reflected by the residents’ pride and artist’s intention, the statue aims to attract not just Royal enthusiasts but also social media users eager for a picturesque moment with the Queen and her favourite breed, ensuring the Queen’s legacy endures in the public memory.
