    Astronomer Royal

Curious about the heavens, King Charles II introduced the first Royal Astrologer position with John Flamsteed filling it in 1675. To this day, this position is still held but has been expanded into two positions, one since 1675, and the other since 1834. The current Astronomer Royal is Martin Rees. “The Gentleman (or Lady) Usher of the Black Rod” aka “Black Rod”

The Black Rod is an official in the parliaments of several Commonwealth countries. This position is in charge of the security and fixing up buildings in the Westminster Palace. The first female Black Rod, Sarah Clarke, was introduced early in 2018.
