Gilmore Girls A Year In The Life: Is It Worth Watching?
It’s risky business reviving TV shows, especially one as popular as Gilmore Girls, so is Gilmore Girls A Year In The Life worth watching?
Fans of Gilmore Girls were thanking their lucky stars that they were being given four new 90 minute episodes of the noughties show, sure to be filled of the witty, lovable female-inspiring characters we know and love.
Returning to the fantastical world dreamed up by creator Amy Sherman Palladino, we were all anticipating a loved up Luke and Lorelai, a career-climbing Rory Gilmore and of course some nostalgic throwbacks to satisfy the Stars Hollow shaped hole in our lives.
Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, Liza Weil and Scott Patterson all returned for the four episodes. However, as good as it was to see the Gilmore Girls cast back on our screens, the Netflix revival left us feeling deflated, perplexed and with more questions than answers. Coffee please and a shot of cynicism.
Why Is Lorelai Hiking?
Lorelai and the outdoors is a match worse than her and Rune. As established in the original series, Lorelai hates nature, made clear by her fishing trip with Alex.
“Fishing? Great. Cold, wet and smelly. My three favourite things after those witches from ‘Macbeth’.”
If Lorelai was looking to do some serious soul searching, it would no doubt be at the shopping mall or during a fast food binge fest. It would NOT be ‘doing Wild‘ in the Pacific Crest trail…
Not only that, she is doing the book version? We all know she’s more of a film gal. Nevertheless, Lauren Graham still rocks the role.

Why Is Rory Jobless And Cheating?
Rory (played by Alexis Bledel) has always been a pillar of female ambition, driven by her dream of becoming a successful journalist. Of course, there are time she strays from her sacred mission – the dropping out of Yale debacle – yet the series ends with her joining the campaign trail for Barack Obama. Naturally, we assumed she would be working at the New York Times however she appears without a solid job or a plan.
Aside from her career, Rory’s social life is somehow even more messy. Seeing Logan even though he has a girlfriend? She has clearly failed to learn her lesson on cheating. (Remember the Dean/Lyndsey fiasco?)
Not only that, she is supposedly seeing, what’s his name – Paul. A role seemingly written in just to demonstrate how inconsiderate and selfish Rory is? A complete character change from the OG Gilmore Girls.

Why was Sookie Not In A Year In The Life?
Okay so she was in it for about two minutes, but as a main character and Lorelai Gilmore’s best friend, why did Melissa McCarthy not act in more of the show?

“I didn’t actually get asked to do it. But I think they thought I was busy, and then by the time it did come up, then I actually was.”

Who Is The Father Of Rory’s Baby?
Obviously, the biggest question of the entire calamity. Who is the father of Rory’s baby? She was seeing Logan, had a one night stand AND we know that she saw Jess (Milo Ventimiglia).
Naturally, it leaves us wondering if those last two words were uttered to open the door to yet another revival.
Is Gilmore Girls Coming Back?
Despite all the questions the Gilmore Girls revival has provoked, it did also provide some throwbacks from the pop culture references (albeit a touch outdated) to Kirk’s craziness to Miss Patty’s dance school. The nostalgia was there but the characters were not. And it left Gilmore Girl fans with a whole lot of questions.
Could they make more Gilmore Girls episodes after a year in the life? Amy Sherman Palladino hasn’t committed to any but she did say:
“Never say never.”
