Jodie Comer: TV Shows, Emmy Win And Rising Star

The 27-year old Jodie Comer is a rising star who is steadily making her way to big-screen success with so much talent and dedication. Her amazing performance in TV series Killing Eve has landed her into the spotlight and there is no going back!

Understandably and rightfully, she is basking in all the glory now. Jodie Comer’s TV shows are aplenty and it is no wonder that she is being hailed for being a star in her own rights.

More about Jodie Comer’s TV shows, her rise to fame, and importantly, her Emmy win!

Jodie Comer is an English actress from Liverpool and she loves it so much there that she often goes back to hang out with fellow Liverpudlians.

“Liverpudlians have an amazing sense of humour, and they’re very loyal and warm. All my family and friends are there, so when I’m not filming, I like to go back and catch up with everyone. We’re a very close family.”

She started her first acting job while she was studying at St Julie’s Catholic High School after her drama teacher sent her to audition for a BBC Radio 4 play.

Fun Fact: She performed a monologue at the school’s talent show and her remarkable performance caught the attention of her drama teacher. Even her father was surprised that she could perform so brilliantly!

In 2008, Jodie played a guest role on an episode of The Royal Today followed by appearances in series such as Waterloo Road, Holby City, Doctors, Silent Witness, Casualty, Law & Order: UK, Vera and Inspector George Gently.

Her rise as an actress began when she took on the lead role for Justice, Remember Me, and My Mad Fat Diary.

Her starring role as Ivy Moxam in Thirteen got her a nomination for the British Academy Television Award for Best Actress.

In addition, the long list of Jodie Comer’s TV shows and other projects also include Doctor Foster, Rillington Palace, and Lady Chatterley’s Lover.

Jodie’s acting as a young Elizabeth of York in The White Princess caught many of her fan’s attention but some were not very excited about the role.

Interestingly, her current fame is due to her acting in BBC America’s spy thriller Killing Eve as Oksana Astankova/ Villanelle. She plays a psychopathic Russian assassin. Her co-stars in the series include Sandra Oh (Yes, she was the one in Grey’s Anatomy!) who plays Eve Polastri, an MI6 agent who pursues assassin Villanelle and Fiona Shaw who plays Eve’s boss.

The series was a remarkable success, all thanks to its amazing storyline and talented casts. Killing Eve season 2 premiered early last year and it was a big hit too!

Thirteen and Killing Eve raked in plenty of nominations and awards for Jodie since 2016.

Some of the awards she won for Killing Eve are Television Actress of the Year in Female First Awards 2018, Best Actress in Broadcasting Press Guild Awards 2019, Best Entertainer in Stylist Remarkable Women Awards 2019, and Best Actress in BAFTA TV Awards 2019.

The Killing Eve star got her big award just last year for her mindblowing performance in the drama series.

Jodie Comer won the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series award in the 71st Prime Time Emmy Awards! (Taylor Swift and Bobby Cannavale from The Irishman are some who won their much-deserved Emmy Awards as well)

Surprisingly, Jodie wasn’t expecting to win at all since her fellow nominees were extremely talented Laura Linney, Viola Davis, Robin Wright, Mandy Moore, Emilia Clarke and Sandra Oh.

Unfortunately, owing to her humility she didn’t even fly her family to the awards function!

“It’s nice to bring your parents to these things. But I just said, ‘Oh no, sit this one out. Now’s not my time.’ I’m probably not going to ever live that one down with them, or they’ll be coming to every single thing now!”

Fun Fact: She almost wouldn’t have made it this far had she given in to her hangover!

Jodie got a call to audition for Killing Eve after partying hard. Despite the hangover, she took a 13-hour flight to Los Angeles and the rest is history!

We Get It…She Is Extremely Talented. But, What Do Her Killing Eve Co-Stars Say About Her?

Sandra Oh has nothing but words of admiration for the way Jodie Comer transformed according to the new roles she had to take on for each episode. From Russian accent to French accent, she took them on like a champion and delivered with such finesse that always keeps her audience mesmerised.

“It’s hugely demanding. There’s the fighting, the accents, the languages. It’s not like a film where you prepare for a year and then you know Russian perfectly.

“We get new scripts, and she goes, ‘Oh, gotta speak French.’ I’d be very hard-pressed to do some of the things Jodie does. She was born with an uncanny ear, and she just has tremendous innate talent. She travels at light speed.”

Meanwhile, Stephen Graham who shared a few frames with her commented on her dedication to do justice to her character. As their scene had some physical elements, Graham made sure Jodie was comfortable but surprisingly Jodie was all game!

“She was up for it. She just wanted to do right by the character. So I went for it, and she went for it, and I immediately thought she was fantastic—one of those actors who are open to giving everything to that moment with no sense of ego.”

“I could see an extreme talent. I watch everything she’s in now.”

Well…well…looks like Jodie has made some seriously good impressions all around with her dedication and work ethics! No wonder, the awards kept finding their way to her.

What Does Jodie Think Of Killing Eve And Her Role In It?

With everyone raving about how brilliant the series was and how even more brilliant Jodie’s acting was, what is Jodie’s take on all of these?

Admittedly, it must be hard not to love a role that brought her an Emmy win!

“What I learned playing Villanelle is that there is acting that can be so full of life and bold that it is ridiculous at times. There was something very freeing about playing her.”

“If you look at other shows, it is always male-female; male killer, female detective. It’s strange how, if you put two women in those roles, the narrative shifts. It’s something that we’ve never seen before and there’s something fascinating about it. Because women are so in tune with their emotions.”

Bigger And Better Achievements Are On Their Way For Jodie Comer!

Jodie Comer is all set to make a mark in the industry as the creator of Killing Eve, Phoebe Waller-Bridge said,

    “She’s given a once-in-a-generation performance and she’s a once-in-a-generation actress.”
