The television presenter collapsed on a flight from Bangkok to London in 2014 and he has now radically changed his diet over fears it could happen again and how it might affect his family including his children - Toby, Helen, Sammy and Jennifer.

He said:
'In the first year after the stroke, my kids were terrified. They were thinking it was going to happen again.

'They are wary because they love me to pieces and they don't want me to go yet.

'Pies are out. No sugar, bread, potatoes. Lots of vegetables.

'I still eat meat but I don't drink whisky at all - I used to drink a lot.

'My consultant said, 'Excess, excess, excess.' I did everything too hard. A really good mate bought me a bottle of vintage whisky! What a stupid thing to do!

'I associate whisky with death now, with falling over'.

And the 72-year-old star - who was married to Ingrid and Sheila and is currently in a longterm relationship with partner Jane Bird - admits he "worked like a dog" when he was in his career prime.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror newspaper, he added:
'I worked like a dog. I used to get four hours sleep a night. It's what you do when you're hot.

'It's not a great way to live because sooner or later you will keel over.

'It did for my marriage [to ex wife Ingrid], no question. I was never home. I was selfish'.
