Knowing the flick would be a hit amongst acne-ridden teens, skin-care company Clearasil considering sponsoring the movie.

Clearasil did not agree with the abortion sub-plot – although never explicitly mentioned, it is implied that  Penny needs money for a doctor with ‘a dirty knife and a folding table’. The writer and producer, Eleanor Bergstein, refused to cut the story line and so she lost the sponsorship.
