Mouthwatering Foods That Are Gone But Not Forgotten

When frozen pizza became available to the masses, we thought Christmas had come early. Although it tasted a bit like cheese on toast, it was a welcome addition to meal times. Then there was quiche – what was quiche?  I wasn’t sure but dad loved it with tinned potato salad and some coleslaw, bought from the deli counter at Littlewoods, next to the cheese section.  Let your tastebuds run wild as we recall some delights.

So quick and easy to make, but which filling to go for: minced beef or cheese?  Served with ‘Smash’ instant mashed potato and tinned peas, it filled us up nicely, although there was just enough room for a Heinz sponge pudding.  That took 10 times longer than the main course, as you had to let it bubble in a pan for ages.

Thinking back, one of my favourites was the Fray Bentos tinned pies.  Full of additives and probably not a lot of actual meat, they were tasty with a capital ‘t’.  The hardest part of the preparation was actually opening the hot can before serving!

When we were young, we weren’t aware of tiramisu or creme brulee.  Our ‘afters’ consisted of tinned fruit with Carnation milk, home made apple pie or a ‘Super Mousse’, bought in stacks of 6 and kept frozen until an hour before eating.  There was, however, an amazing dessert which I will never forget…

Everyone in the world, surely, loves a trifle.  They can be quite fiddly to make, what with all the layers involved.  The short cut version, which even I could execute was ‘Birds Instant Trifle’.  My sister and I would fight over who was going to sprinkle the hundreds and thousands (in the little cellophane packet) over the top.

We didn’t touch on ‘Vesta’ meals.  ‘Vesta Chow Mein’ was the first Chinese food I ever tried.  With nothing to compare it to, I thought it was authentic.  There was always a buzz around the house when we knew it was on the menu.  So, I led a sheltered life but it did me no harm.
