Toys From Mum’s Catalogue That We Needed So Badly

When I was about 10, my main hobby was looking through the John Moore’s catalogue!  I wasn’t yet into fashion so the toy section was my holy bible.  The autumn/winter edition was jam packed with Christmas gifts: life-like dolls that cried real tears, the latest games, such as ‘Mastermind’ and a whole host of goodies to fill a giant Xmas stocking.  You could pay for items over 20 weeks, so everything was affordable – right?

Well, we couldn’t listen to chart hits on this ingenious contraption, but there was no issue with hearing your favourite nursery rhymes a hundred times over – not the easiest to dance to!

A useful gift, which all the family could enjoy, was your very own oven – a personal favourite of mine.  I actually had this and made some tasty buns in under 2 hours.  I was so proud of myself.  The power of the oven was so low, it barely warmed your hands but that was a minor blip.

I have to admit, it was often disappointing to rip open the wrapping paper to reveal an enormous box and then be faced with an item much smaller than it looked in the catalogue.  I am referring, in particular, to Sindy’s horse which was about the size of a carrot.

I had owned a bride doll since I was very young but, after scalping her with a pair of craft scissors, I lost interest in Audrey and her wedding attire.  It was time to befriend a more realistic figure and that is when my beloved Sindy doll took pride of place in my bedroom.  She was dressed so trendy and you could purchase her wardrobe for 45p a week.

I had a list of toys and games I had the intention of acquiring.  I juggled with the idea of getting a paper round to make my hopes and dreams a reality, but I was scared of dogs and didn’t fancy tackling one to the ground, whilst attempting to post the newspaper through the letter box.
