11. The Sacrament

This 2013 film was about a man (and two journalists) going to a religious commune to see his sister.

When they go into the commune, that’s when the bad stuff happens. ‘Father’, the leader, is shown to be abusive and controlling, with a group of residents turning rebellious.

As you would expect from a horror movie, it ends with (spoiler alert) virtually everybody dying.

Jonestown

The film was inspired by the Jonestown settlement, set up by the religious movement People’s Temple.

It became infamous in 1978 when over 900 people died, most from cyanide poisoning. Some individuals survived, as did a tape recording that showed how the events unfolded.

Unnerving

These real events seem like they should have happened much earlier than the 1970s. The film’s portrayal of this story certainly gives you food for thought!
