Frances Hodgson Burnett’s children’s novel The Secret Garden is regarded as a classic in English literature. Not only that, it has been adapted countless times on film, television, and stage – so there isn’t a person that hasn’t heard of it!

If the story has somehow passed you by, it follows “Mary Mary quite contrary”, a selfish girl born in India who was sent to live in Yorkshire with her uncle after her parents die. Over time Mary becomes nicer – thanks to finding a “secret” walled garden, making friends and helping her invalid cousin Colin back to health.

Rather than making everyone’s lives a misery like she did initially, Mary actually brought joy into their lives!

But what are some secrets about The Secret Garden and its 1993 adaptation? Wonder no more my friends…

    Same name, different faces…

The cast of 1993 adaptation seemed perfect for their characters, but they could have looked very different…

    1. A new Mary?

Although Kate Maberly eventually got the role of Mary, Kirsten Dunst also auditioned for the part.

Kirsten was apparently gutted when she didn’t get the role, but she’s not done too bad for herself since then!

    2. Competition for Colin

Colin could also have looked very different! Although Heydon Prowse got the nod, Elijah Wood was one of those who got turned down for the role.

But Elijah did become Frodo Baggins in Lord of the Rings so I don’t think he’s too upset now!

    3. Second choice

Although John Lynch seemed made to play Lord Craven, he was only cast just before filming as the original actor pulled out last minute!
