‘Grey’s Anatomy’ is a hugely popular medical drama and is second only to ‘ER’ in how long it’s been running. Not only that, it’s been a TV “juggernaut” over the years with it’s consistently dominant ratings. It reached a peak of 19.44 million viewer throughout the second season in the U.S. alone and still keeps an average of 8 million viewers an episode today.

Now that the fourteenth season has been finished for a couple of months, it’s getting harder to stay patient for season fifteen. Therefore, we need something to tide us over until then.

There’s still so much about the show that you probably don’t know. To address this and to whet your appetite, we’ve collected a bunch of interesting facts, stories and secrets about your favourite medical drama.

See below a list of 40 secret things about ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ that you probably didn’t know:

    1. The inspiration for the show came from the Discovery Channel.

Shonda Rhimes came up with the show from her love of medical shows on the Discovery channel. She’s said, “There’s something fascinating about the medical world – you see things you’d never imagine, like the fact doctors talk about the day while they’re cutting somebody open.”

    2. The genius of the show came from a doctor shaving her legs.

She’s said, “My show is more personal. The idea for the series began when a doctor told me it’s incredibly hard to shave her legs in the hospital shower.”

<p>In the same interview with <a href="http://www.oprah.com/omagazine/oprah-interviews-greys-anatomy-creator-shonda-rhimes#ixzz4nO3igJrm" data-tracking-id="recirc-text-link">Oprah</a>, Rhimes said, "My show is more personal [than <em data-redactor-tag="em" data-verified="redactor">E.R.</em><span class="redactor-invisible-space">]</span>. The idea for the series began when a doctor told me it was incredibly hard to shave her legs in the hospital shower. At first that seemed like a silly detail. But then I thought about the fact that it was the only time and place this woman might have to shave her legs."<br><span class="redactor-invisible-space" data-verified="redactor" data-redactor-tag="span" data-redactor-class="redactor-invisible-space"></span></p>

    3. The show was originally not set in Seattle.

Shonda originally wanted it to be in her hometown of Chicago but changed her mind since that’s where ‘ER’ is set.

    4. It had a different name.

It was originally going to be called, ‘Complications’, not ‘Grey’s Anatomy’.
