In North Korea, photography is strictly censored. It is illegal to photograph extremes of poverty or wealth, malnutrition or fatigued soldiers in any state of relaxation.
The rules apply beyond just the desperate North Korean people, however. It’s a big no-no simply to take any snaps of statues of the Kim dynasty from behind.
In previous years, photos from inside North Korea were hard to come by. Today, however, with the country more open to western visitors, pictures have begun to emerge from the country of life in one of the poorest nations on Earth.
Though the photographs they take are to adhere to severe guidelines, some westerners have managed to smuggle photos of the real North Korea out of the country.
