As all women know your hair, nails and sleep are hugely important to your overall appearance and well-being. A good nights sleep makes you feel on top of the world, whilst a strong set of nails and a full head of hair makes you feel confident and ready to take on the day.
If one of these three elements has been neglected it is a recipe for disaster. Of course we are not always in control, some of us suffer from insomnia or unfortunately have a predisposition to brittle nails or chronic hair loss. But, things can be done to prevent all of the above and this starts with your diet.
The following 3 vitamins will all help you on the road to recovery. Please however consult a doctor before you dramatically change your diet.
Zinc is a vital mineral for your body and it helps to keep it healthy. It contributes to nail and hair growth as your body develops and a diet with very low levels of Zinc content will lead to brittle, dry nails. Obviously eating foods with a high Zinc content will help to improve these symptoms. But what are these foods….
People will normally tell you that seafood is the only option, but the following foods all have a good zinc count and not all of these are your typical ‘healthy’ foods.
- Beef: often overlooked but has a very high Zinc content
- Flax Seeds: quite unusual but also linked with regulation of hormones so an all round super food.
- Pumpkin Seeds: obviously only really consumed on halloween.
- Oysters: for the more promiscuous.
- Shrimp: fairly difficult to get hold of but taste delicious.
- Kidney beans: you can easily slip these into a chilli con carne.
- Watermelon seeds: you can barely taste them, so it is perfect.
- Spinach: not only used for growing muscle
Also, I forgot to mention but Zinc has been known to help you sleep.
Lack of Iron in your diet can cause a number of health issues. But one of these (obviously the most important) is dry brittle nails. Not only this but it can also make your nails go a funny concave shape.
Why is Iron so important I hear you ask? Well it is the vitamin in the body that is needed to produce red blood cells, that is why the majority of your Iron is found in the bodies blood stream. The following foods are what you need to eat/drink if you want more Iron in your diet:
- Red meat: get yourself a steak dinner, however most health buffs would recommend not eating in excess
- Poultry (chicken): Very easily accessible and a great source of Iron
- Seafood: Seafood is pretty much the best food going
- Beans: Maybe not your baked kind, but runners are what you need to go for
- Dark green vegetables
- Raisins: The kind you used to eat at school from the little cardboard carton
Guinness is also rumoured to be a great source of Iron, but please do not drink too much. The negative effects will of course outweigh the positive.
3. Vitamin C
Vitamin C is one of the only Vitamins that the body does not naturally produce. So to get this in you need to consume foods that have the vitamin inside. Vitamin C is a main component of collagen and the body therefore needs it for hair and nail production. Without this you run the risk of hair loss, brittle nails and the growth of your nails to dramatically slow down.
So, what foods can we consume…Basically it is all about fruit and veg.
- Red pepper
- Brussels sprouts
I would suggest putting all of the above into a nice smoothie.
