Probably the worst thing about school was PE, followed by Maths, Science, French and, come to think about it, EVERY other subject we had to put up with. However, there was more to school than just learning. During recess, we brought the latest school crazes and trends to the playground, we made paper fortune tellers in class to determine our future and pizza day during school dinners was always something I looked forward to.
Mom would buy my school uniform 2 sizes too big for me, so I could grow into it, so, as soon as I was out of sight on the way to the bus, I would roll the waistband of my skirt up about 6 inches and pull my knee high socks down to my ankles. Then I would apply some Maybelline Kissing Potion lip gloss (I could always live in hope) and I was on my way! Here’s why school wasn’t such a bad place after all.
1 Pizza For School Dinners
One of the best things about going to school! The meals, generally, were pretty good but pizza was by far the tastiest. One of our dinner ladies would take pity on me, as I was so skinny, and give me seconds. Apart from pizza, the desserts were very edible, especially Jello with coconut cake!
2 Chocolate Milk
As long as it was served chilled, I could gulp the carton down in one go. The problem was if it was stacked in a crate by the heaters in our classroom, it turned warm and no amount of persuasion would make me drink it. Mom sometimes bought the mini orange juice cartons which tasted very sweet. We never realised, back then, how much sugar went into them and I reckon they contributed to tooth decay more than candy.
3 Crayola Crayons
Back in the 70s and 80s, I used to get a new large box of Crayola crayons and, after Thanksgiving, I would get a giant coloring book. As we only got presents on special occasions, we were quite excited to get these. I would spend hours coloring and I used to sharpen my crayons with a chunky sharpener so they always stayed nice. I kept them in the box in shade order, just as they were when they were new.
