Working titles for the show included E8, Square Dance, Round the Square, Round the Houses and London Pride. They ended up settling on EastEnders when they realised that they’d been calling casting agencies asking them for any real “east enders.” However, when they wrote it down they didn’t like the way it looked on paper, so they decided to capitalise the second e.
2. Where Did Walford Come From?
The creators of EastEnders, Julia Smith and Tony Holland, were born in Walthamstow and Stratford respectively. When deciding what to name the area EastEnders takes place in, they just took parts of their own hometowns and stuck them together. Talk about imaginative writing ey?
3. There’s A Lot Of Stuff To Watch
Okay, so if you decided to sit down and watch every single episode of EastEnders, from right to the beginning all the way to the 30th anniversary episode, you would be using up a lot of your life. In fact, if you wanted to do it without sleeping, it would take you around 104 days to get all the way through the series. I don’t know if that’s impressive or whether they need to just let it die.
