Asda is one the UKs largest supermarket chains, with over 600 stores in the UK alone. When we think of ASDA we probably recall the familiar “that’s ASDA price” slogan, but have you noticed that that’s actually been changed to “Save Money. Live Better”? #1. ASDA is owned by Walmart.
Although the headquarters of ASDA are based in Leeds, West Yorkshire, the company is actually owned by US supermarket giant, Walmart. They bought ASDA back in 1999 for a whopping £6.7 billion, trumping a rival bid from Kingfisher plc.
#2. The name comes from Asquith (AS) and Dairies (DA).
Peter Asquith built his first new supermarket from scratch and was looking for a company to take over his in-store butchery operation. He contacted Noel Stockdale at Associated Dairies and on the 3rd May 1965, Asda was born.
#3. The clothing range George is named after the founder of Next.
The clothing brand was introduced in the 90s and named after George Davies, founder of Next, who was the original chief designer. The George brand is also sold in Walmart in Argentina, Canada, China, India, Japan, Mexico, and the US, and also sold at four stand alone dedicated stores in Malta.
#4. ASDA offer an “overcharged promise”.
If ASDA accidentally over charge you for a product in store, they must refund you the difference and issue you with a £2 gift card per item- every little helps!
#5. ASDA is NOT the nations most popular supermarket.
Tesco comes first with just under a third of overall market share, followed by Asda’s share of 17.5%, and Sainsbury’s at 16.1%. They have a long way to go to overtake Tesco.
