Cologne

Cologne, it’s been a pleasure…

Six days, temperatures of over 30 degrees and architecture known all around the world. What more could you want in a city.

Cologne holds a special place in the heart of all Germans and it didn’t take long to realise why.

Its skyline is dominated by the spires of its famous cathedral, and the Rhine River borders the whole of the city.

Cologne’s cultural heritage was embodied by the accommodation we managed to unearth through HostelworldDie Wohngemeinschaft is the name, and what a name it is! The hostel has 17 rooms to choose from, each promising a very different experience.

Opened back in 2010, in the cities Belgian Quarter where the locals spend a lot of their time. Die Wohngemeinschaft was designed with the idea of different people, using different spaces, each giving a different story – and it does exactly that.

Each room has a different theme. Ours, very aptly, was inspired by a famous writer, Danilo. It was decorated with a typewriter, bookcase lampshades and literature you could read long into the night.

But if you were looking for something different, Die Wohngemeinschaft has something for everyone. Whether you decide to stay in the Bollywood cinema, a 60s mod chill pad, climb on board and into the boat-bed, or even a beautiful cabin in the woods, you wont be disappointed and it makes your stay much more than a place to rest your head.

Die Wohngemeinschaft is a diverse mix between cliche and art and while the double and triple rooms on offer are definitely worth the trip alone, they also offer dorms with extra large beds and curtains on each bunk for extra privacy.

The hostel wasn’t the beginning for Die Wohngemeinschaft, it began as a bar (which holds a nice set back area or table tennis, which we became slightly addicted to) and also has a theatre that holds exclusive gigs and concerts – all extremely popular with locals. This makes it much more than just a hostel bar, and it gives you the chance to get to know the city first hand, as it is extremely busy all week. This is definitely the place to stay in Cologne! With both the busy hostel, and very popular bar together, this is a sure winner to meet new and interesting people from near and far.

You can book your experience at this brilliant hostel directly through the Hostelworld site – here.

Once you finally manage to drag yourself away from the hostel there’s so much of the city to see.

As mentioned earlier, Cologne Cathedral is a special structure and the pride of the city in most people’s eyes. Originally constructed in 1248, the gothic cathedral now welcomes thousands of visitors every year. And what makes it even more special, you can experience it all for free.

The cathedral is built in the cities old town. Filled with narrow alleyways, lined with traditional houses, breweries and restaurants, all facing out to the Rhine River. You could get lost all day, and later find your way onto the charismatic Hohenzollern Bridge. Decorated with thousands of Love Locks, left by couples who have come from far and wide to leave their mark on the city. It’s definitely something worth experiencing, or even adding to.

Once you’ve crossed the bridge, you will be met by the Cologne Triangle. A structure standing 103 metres tall, and a place you can go to overlook the whole of this beautiful city. The top floor has a 360 degree panoramic viewing platform open to visitors for just three euros.

Last but not least, is a trip to Cologne’s RheinEnergieStadion. Tickets for matchday start as low as 16 euros, and the crowd is one of the loudest in the country. Something most football fans will cherish for a long time.

So there you have it. Although we didn’t expect much from Cologne when we began our journey, it’s one we’re very glad we made.
