It’s one of ITVs most entertaining shows, and the upcoming 9th series will mark a whole decade of Benidorm’s drama, fun and adventures. But despite our enthusiasm and our undying commitment to watch every single episode, there are many things we actually don’t know about Benidorm and its cast. Here is a list of just 17 things we didn’t know about Benidorm.
1. The writer, Derren Litten, was set to quit the show in 2011, before he discovered Joan Collins was a fan.
Derren Litten had announced that he was in fact quitting Benidorm in 2011. But shortly after Jackie Collins tweeted “Benidorm is totally fab. My sis Joan Collins would love to do a guest shot on it. I got her addicted!!!”. It was in 2014 that Joan first made her Benidorm debut.
2. The ‘Solana’ hotel was a carefully thought out name.
According to the Benidorm twitter account, the show’s trademark hotel was simply named because ‘Sol’ translates into sun. So essentially, the Solana hotel is the sun hotel.
3. Benidorm isn’t always as hot as it looks.
Cast members have confessed that filming can take place as late as November. And at that time of the year lounging around by the pool only leaves your teeth “chattering” and “lips turning blue”.
4. Rumours of Benidorm the movie have always been false.
The show’s writer have adamantly denied speculation that there will be a Benidorm movie, nor any more Christmas specials for that matter. So we won’t be watching on the big screen any time soon.
5. Even the Benidorm mayor is a fan.
Although we’d all agree that the show doesn’t portray Benidorm as the classiest of places, the Benidorm mayor is hugely in favour of the show! He was even said to be enthusiastic about the idea of having a plaque in honour of Derren Litten.
